I think this is why people make pancakes. =) Cleaning the waffle iron is a real pain. My waffle maker looks exactly like the one you have pictured. Mine also came with no instructions because its my fiance's. As far as how much batter to use, you should use a ladle and through trial and error figure out how much is the best amount. I would guesstimate approximately 1/4 c. For cleaning the overspill, from what I have read online, everyone says to unplug the iron (obviously) and wait until the waffle iron has completely cooled before cleaning. I have cleaned the back of the unit (where the coils are, which unfortunately got flooded with batter the first time) with a damp kitchen brush, damp sponge, and paper towels. Its messy and time consuming to clean up. You can get in the coils better with an old toothbrush or a very small bottle cleaner (like the kind you would buy to clean cake decorator tips). I just use warm water to remove the batter/gunk. I use a sponge (damp with warm water) to clean the baking plates. I towel dry everything after its clean, and clean the outside with a little windex so it stays nice and shiny. Good luck! I also recommend making lots of extra waffles and freezing them, so you can avoid as much waffle clean-up as possible. ;) You can heat them up in the toaster like Eggos. They stay good in the freezer for up to 6 months.

Power cord overheats

The thermostat is not shutting the unit down and cycling it on/off as it should. This will cause the power cord to overheat and it will catch fire. STOP using this unit and either replace it or have it repaired. More than likely cheaper to just replace it.
