Often it is to do with the kind of sound that is being outputted by the DVD player. If the sound for example is set to produce dolby 5.1 and you don't have a suitable decoder it will be very low. Check the sound settings of both your DVD player and sound system.

Koss 8.5 ks1721-4 manufactured 2008 power light turns green, won't play DVD,won't light screen, shuts down after a couple of minutes. Have had on charge for long periods of time and no change.
