good policy is to replace any faulty plug in socket and the jack lead
on sound equipment

gaffer tapping the power input plug wont help much
anything pushed... is no good

hot connections indicate a short or bad connection ( like an arc welder )
loose wires or solder dry joint or broken wires creating a high resistance and heat in this area

Is the preamp or channel strip set.to Line level or Mic level?
If ita not at line level then it is trying to push signal out that isnt loud enough, hense the distortion
