What size sd card can i use in a dimage z1

You may use any size SD card. Bear in mind that SD cards max out at 2GB. Larger cards are actually SDHC cards and won't work in the Z1.

Download software software drivers

I found a Minolta site in Germany where you can download drivers for win 98. For the newer Windows (2000, XP, Vista, 7 and 8) the drivers are already in Windows. Second link is for the transfer software. Link to drivers for Minolta in Win 98link to Konica Minolta transfer software

Yipes - seems that electronics have developed a nind of their own. Check with the manufacturer, if manual has no mention, of a reset switch or hidden code that will reset unit to factory defaults. Cross your fingers.

From the start, the camera has been very heavy on

First of all, referencing a 'previous mail' is of little use - at Fixya, posts are made on forums when requesting assistance. Secondly, you say 'even re-chargeable batteries' - not all re-chargeable batteries are alike. Many people recommend the use of 2500mAh re-chargeable batteries to provide power to cameras. Thirdly, I cannot comment on the suggestion there may be a fault with this particular model - a Google search may provide more information on this matter.
