i used to work at a repair shop for kohler 98 bucks an hour to check it out. and for them to repair who knows?. i would do my best if not in a hurry to figure it out on my own. you can purchsae a service manual and stick with your basics; spark gas, and from there go deeper.

You will have to hold the flywheel for removing the clutch. It may require removing the blower housing. I use an impact wrench which loosens the bolt w/o holding the flywheel. It's 99% a regular bolt (turn ccw to remove) since left hand threads cost more to buy the bolt and tap the hole and small engine stuff is made as cheaply as possible.

The problem is not likely battery related. It sounds like either an ignition or fuel control relay that is not actuating due to missing electrical voltage.

The Kohler 7.5 R had a possible three different voltage regulators that could be used. You need to check there first. Also if you can get it the service manual for these are tp-5110 Which will show you how to test the regulator o the bench. There was a 5 6 and 7 pin regulator that could have been used.

check diodes on main control board. they short out if something went wrong.

You will likely need to reference your instruction manual for that specific control panel.

Go to the kohler web site for instructions. If nothing you can google this and probably get a utube video to show you how it is done.

Does your unit have a low oil kill sensor if it does the unit won't start if the oil is low also if the sensor is bad that will kill the power. I do know if this may be your problem but check the oil level. good luck.

Its only supposed to start in neutral

usually means you have to replace the carb and get the gasket with it. when the needle valve develops a problem they don't intend for you to fix it. this has been my experience.
