Most likely, the eelectrical solenoid that releases the door's latch has failed. The control board may be the fault. The solenoid is in the door and in many models the board is too. If you wish to inspect either component, do it safely by insuring the power is disconnected. Some troubleshooting requires the power to be on. Put some kind of washer on the spindle to stop the up and down motion of spinner. Manual can be gotten at mfg web site or google search. For the residue I would use a sudsy ammonia cleaner or grease cutter. Or a baking soda paste .
