It could be that you have the brush settings wrong for your carpet type. Check if the brushes are on number 3, if so, try dropping them down a notch or two and see if that does it. I think that the brushes when spinning spin towards you, so when pulling the vacuum back, the brushes are helping to drive, when pushing forward, you are pushing against the brushes. If the brushes are sticking out too far, it could cause bouncing/jumping. HTH :)

It will show you where the spring goes (left side inside the ratchet - when you remove the ratchet you will see that it is hollow. That's where the spring goes!) and a good picture of that assembly

There is no other way to clean mattress except by using a vacuum cleaner. I had the same problem and I called my local Kirby guy, he's great, helped me when I thought I blew my kirby up, it was just a cord and he wa able to tell me that over the phone. When I called him with this problem, he knew right away that it was only putting out a thin strip in the middle only. The first thing was I needed that little screen, the second was the hole where the screen goes has a white tube that goes from that hole to the bottom of the tank, its kinda in the corner and I never thought it would have anything to do with the problem. He said I needed to run hot water in it and clean it cuz I was going to have to blow in it, yes, with my mouth. I ran it under hot water for a few minutes and then with hot water in the hole, blew into it. I did this a few times, checking the tube ending each time. After a few times, water was shooting freely through the tube. Problem solved, I think, I'll be shampooing tonight so i'll know for sure then. An alternative to blowing with your mouth would be using a can of air, didnt think of it till now and I have 1!

There should be a definite audible click when you press down on the switch. Most switches also latch so that there is a little play in the foot switch when it is on. Possible problems included - blown fuse in the plug, damaged cord, failed starter capacitor. It may be an idea to take it to a local vacuum repair store and get an estimate for repair.

Remove rear housing /3 screws and one under cover. Remove wires with paperclip install screw clip and reinstall. Also one screw under rear wheels , loosen don't remove as it helps hold lower section on the switch.

If you are using the correct shampoo then the tank my need to be replaced. They will clog if tank wasn't cleaned after last used. Check that the dial is open and both filters are in place , add water and shampoo and test without the hose connected . If you still have no suds coming out then just order a new tank.

The switch bar is bent , and needs to be replaced. You can try to re-bend it but this takes some skill. Take the bar out and lay it flat and you will see the where to straighten .

You can pry them off , just make sure they go back on the correct end.

The conversion of Amps to Watts is governed by the equation
Watts = Amps x Volts

For example 1 amp @ 110 volts = 110 watts
your case 7 amp @ 120 volts = 840 watts
unless you are running it at 230v but I don't think you can
I would look for one rated for Volt-Amps instead of watts
It's best to round up to be safe add 40 - 60 watts
