I have a kingston 2

this could be due to the format. i would try different formats on your usb. vista normally reads both but your format may be fat32 which is hit n miss. you can try UDF or FAT. I would format on a vista machine. insert, right click on the drive and select format. you may have to do both with a single file to test reads on both boxes. good luck.

Look at the MMC card pictured here. See if there is a slideable lock. If so, simply slide it in the opposite direction. If there is no slideable part, place a small amount of tape on the cut-out section, on the opposite side of the card with the cut-off corner. Be sure the tape is folded over, so no adhesive gets into the device. Insert the card and see if it works.
If it does not work, the card itself may be defunct.
The final step to try is reformatting the card. If the card is used in a phone, use the menu on the phone to reformat the card. WARNING- this will delete all data contained on the card. However, reformatting the card may be the only way to get further use from the card.

How can I remove write protection on my usb drive?

If this is a SD card as depicted, then the slide switch on the left side is the write protect. Slide the switch towards the top to unlock.

If this is some other type of usb drive, post what kind.

Memory card error

Hi michellefwon,

Try the card in your computer using a SDHC card reader to see if it will read your picture files. If that doesn't work then you'll have to shop for data recovery software on line. Ontrack Data Recovery is a very reputable recovery company. They offer recovery services by sending them your card or by purchasing their do-it-yourself software.

Hi George,

If you right-click on the removable device and go to properties, when in there uncheck the read-only box and click OK.
If that doesn't sort it check the actual card itself and see if there is a switch or slider on it that can be moved.

Make sure the little white switch on the side isn't set to write protect the SD card. Try and format the SD card, it will erase whatever is on the card. To do this right click the SD card removable disk under my computer, then click format. I would make sure you select FAT16 in the options there. Then try to copy files to the card again. If it still doesn't work, try using the SD card in another machine.

If the card works in another machine, we know the SD card is good. If it doesn't work, you might have a bad card.

If the card works in another machine, try another SD card in your laptop, to make sure the laptop connector for your card is not bad.
