You'll need a timing light and a testpropeller... ( it can be done sailing, but it's dangerous and you have to be 2 on board...) the maximum advance is 30°BTDC. The setting is made by the setscrew at the portside of the engine on a bracket just under the flywheel. Loosen the nut and turn te screw. 1 turn of the screw is 1° setting. Turn out to get MORE advance, turn in to get less advance. Retighten the nut after setting.

You should have some water sprayt with exhaust gasses in the above water exhaust... There is no separate water pressure indicator like on newer motors.

You can unhook tge cooling line while then crank it. Sgould spray water.

it sank..ooopppsss...sounds like trouble.. First thing I would do is check the compression with a gauge... This will require a GREAT friend.. remove all the spark plugs - makes PULLING the engine over easier.. get a compression gauge (or take it to a competent professional to get the compression checked!). Install the compression gauge... Put the throttle wide open... have your buddy yank with ALL his heart about 6-8 times..it should show about 115psi+ minimum..all 3 cylinders should be with 10+-psi. If they are not at these specs minimum..you have found the issue..then try putting a little outboard oil into all three cylinders and repeat the test.. if the PSI goes way up.. you have found the issue.

rectifiers do not charge , their purpose id to change ac current to dc current to run the electrical circuits connected to the battery it is the voltage regulator that controls the charge from the stator of the motor using a multimeter set on volts dc connect across the battery and read the voltage ( 12--13.2 volts ) start the motor and increase the rpms to around 2000 rpm and read the meter it should be 14.5- 14.8 volts dc that indicates that the system is charging if not , take it to a service center that has a marine electrician to fix the problem

Hey David, these tiny carbs have TINY passages for air and gas that are hard to get perfectly clean...is the primer bulb staying tight?.. Did you remove any screws that had springs on them? .. these MUST be set at a certain number of turns out from lightly seated..(the passages these screws regulate must be absolutely clean).. If you are not sure.. take the carb to a qualified professional. ( a profession motorcycle mechanic can do the job too) did you clean the needle valve and seat very well.. clean and check the seat with a swab?..this will tell if you have got it clean and if there are any defects in the seat...

for that year of manufacture 4 strokes were not the normal thing in outboards if it doesn't have rocker covers and rocker gear it is a 2 stroke

Set the motor on the transom and make sure the cavitation plate is below the bottom of the boat.
