A sheared flywheel key will not. This version of the Kohler CV employs fixed timing with a basic ignition module. A sheared flywheel key would not prevent spark but rather produce spark at the wrong time.
A simple test would be to disconnect the kill wire at the module and then check spark.
The module listed is JD MIU11542. They appear to be near symetrical and it may be possible (?) to install mirrored. The ignition module will not operate with a reversed field. Be sure to match the orientation of the working ignition module.

If it was working before, there is no need to worry about the firing order as that never changes. Things to look at;
Clean and correctly gapped spark plugs,
Clean gas,
Fuel filter?
and a clean carburetor, float bowl and jets.

Are you sure the new belt was the right size? It shouldn't be on maximum tension and still come off. They do have a history of throwing belts. Take a look at the videos.

There's little in free information available regarding 997 DTC errors other than the handful in the owners manual.The only two temperature sensors I find in the wiring diagram are engine and transmission and only the transmission temperature interrupts the PTO so I believe the "start thermal protection" is a hydrostat pump overheat state and shutting down the PTO is their way to protect the pump.My only suggestion is make sure the hydro pump is clean and clear of debris and service the hydro, new filter and replace fluid.
Its on google just found it just put in john deere 777 mower belt track it shows how it goes once you see it its simple to install , you may find it on u tube . I changed my belt bit of a hair pull but once you see it .Its easy .
