I don't know your experience with this machine so bear in mind.

Your "grinding" could be the machines internal slip clutch, but just guessing. Likely you can't make needle move up/down with handwheel or make a full or multiple turns of handweel ?

If yes, then check the bobbin area (hook and race) is not fouled with thread and/or fabric.

If bobbin area is clear, then try changing the stitch selector to see if its jammed as well.

What type of sewing were you doing when this occured?

Comment here and I'll assist further if need be.

Do you have the setting on zigzag? You can check this site to make sure you are placing the needle in correctly. https://www.manualslib.com/manual/514817/Janome-1600p-Series.html?page=16

I hope this helps.

Hello Pat

Refer to this link
http://www.alkosewing.com/thread-chart.asp

to convert between Madeira and Janome embroidery thread. My experience so far is: Isacord conversion charts are very scant and provide a number of possible thread colour option for a particular thread colour of another brand.

Hopefully this chart will be a good start for your purpose.

Happy stitching

Remove the top cover by taking the two large screws and the small one under the handle, LHS.

Remove the left side cover. The hidden screw is a 2.5mm allen accessed through the vent.

Lay the machine on its back and remove the four large phillips screws on the bottom and the small screw for the side, paying extreme caution with respect to the embroidery arm.

CAREFULLY move the bottom to the left and out of the way.

Inside the body of the machine you will see a black box held in place by three or torx/slotted screws. Remove the screws and, as you slowly pull the box out MAKE NOTE OF WHICH WIRES PLUG IN WHERE.

It wont turn either direction, not a smidgen? Did it jam while sewing? Can you remove bobbin? Will foot move up/down?

Please check handwheel clutch engaged (in) and bobbin winding spindle disengaged (all the way to the left).

I didn't find a 360 (free), but a 344 appears to be nearly identical. The only notable difference I see is the orientation of tension control selector. Everything else looks the same.
