HI, this sometimes happens when it needs cleaning. Sometimes lint and thread gets caught underneath the sewing plate, so try giving it a thorough clean. Hope it helps.

We have about 30 electroluminescent backlights for the 8000 still available .These are not original Janome parts. You will need a Janome service person to install then for you as it requires taking apart alot of the machine to get to the display. We can provide instructions if this person is unsure how to fit. There is an LCD Backlight Panel that illuminates the screen, and yes, they do fail.
Before you start, just check the screen contrast dial inside the top cover, front right, they can be easily knocked and this will also cause the screen to go light or dark.
Janome no longer supplies the LCD Backlight, however, we have an after market replacement at our store, and also provide fitting instructions and a good deal more besides.
If you care to contact me I can send a Diagnostic Routine and the Screen Reset instructions for you to check if there is anything else causing troubles.

Take for service

1. Thin material needs backing. 2. Lower foot pressure. 3. Adjust top tension to four. 4. Adjust bobbin (lower) after top tension is adjusted. 5. Increase distance of stitch.

Make sure to only thread the machine and needle with the presser foot raised.

Rethread with the presser foot up.

most likely the bobbin thread is wound around the components. remove the bobbin and check for a mass of thread cut it all away and remove every last bit then it should work

It is possible. The lever is locted at the rear of the free arm. It is a bit like a switch. The diagram on page five of the manual shows it being operate with the left hand. Push to right to drop feed and push to left to raise feed again. https://www.janome.com/siteassets/support/manuals/economy-models/inst-book-7318-english.pdf You have to remove the extension table to reach the lever on the back of the free arm. If no switch there you need to visit a sewing machine store or call Janomefor more information
