I'm running OS 10.13.6 on a mac book pro. My Iomega MDHD500-TE is not recognized. What to do?
I suspect that you don't have an Iomega driver in play for use with this Macbook pro that the OS recognizes. There are other possible explanations, you might have a corrupted volume or there might be a problem with the file structure on the Iomega. But if the Iomega was not previously recognized by this MacPro, I think what is missing is a useful driver. You might try one of the driver hunter utilities and see if it finds such for the iomega. If several are found, you would have to try each one at a time and uninstall any that did not work before trying the next, I think.
Here is something else you might try. On the MacPro, on the desktop go into Applications>Utility folder and from the Utilities folder launch the Disk Utility application. If your Iomega is discoverable, it will show up in the left side of the Utility window. If you see it, click on the left side of the window and choose Disk Repair.
If you don't see it in the left side of the Utility window, you may have a corrupted volume preventing it from properly being read on your Mac or there may be a problem with the file structure of the Iomega.

I would go on the web interface of the device. Find the IP address of the device and enter it into your browser. Maybe it has a setting for 'sleep' mode. Also, on rare occasions, the power adapter can go bad on them unexpectedly, not your fault, just a bad batch of hardware.

Can you ping the drive using it's IP address from a command prompt? You should be able to pull a browser type the IP address and see the drive You do realize that you should be able to see the drive and access it by clicking on file explorer then network via Windows. Sometimes the third party software makes things harder then they have to be. Consider Flashing your router with DD-WRT Kong mod the router control features are 1000 times better than Netgear, Asus, etc not to mention ehanced security like VPN at the router level so the PC's attached to the router are visible to nosey ISP's.

however there are people who collect dead hard drives and can interchange boards as the failure can be the reader arm or laser and the board is in good condition

first thing to do is populate the drive go into settings or Google make model of drive for trouble shooting that should help

Since your using NAS storage I assume the 1 TB drive is connected via your router? Is it powered by the USB port or plugged in via AC Adapter? If your powering the drive via USB go to the router setup page-NAS setup and make sure the router is not telling the USB port to save energy by powering down. Make sure the port is always on. The Router setup is proprietary to the Brand of router my Netgear R7000 with Kong DD-WRT Mod has a setting that controls power to the USB Ports. Make sure the drive enclosure isn't hot they have a tendancy to power down if they get to hot. Clean the vents if it has any so the drive stays at a normal operating temp

Whatcha got a do is check yer properties, if it's full you'll have to reformat the disk to FAT32 then git the files an zip em up an transfer em over that way an you should be all good..
