It might be the start button not making contact or it could be the control board. It depends on the model, Hotpoint has made a few in the last 50 years. Whip your multimeter out and check the switch for continuity.

I have the same problem with my Hotpoint WMD 962P. However they seem to have changed some other things to make it easier to maintain without taking the front paneloff e.g. there is no clamp on the inner door seal so you can just leverage the spring off.

Put in a washing load and run a programme.

I have same issue, have just worked out that: 1=Intensive 2=Normal 3=Daily 4=Prewash 5=Eco

Remove top cover, and see if the belt is intact, if it is then it could be the motor is not working for one reason or another, this would entail further investigation.

there must be something wrong with the computer board, I would try getting some one else to have a look at it,if its triping the braker on the fuse board it must be the washing machine

This is normally caused by a badly sealing door gasket. It pulls in moist warm air and deposits it near the evaporator. Your manual says it has auto-defrost, so if it is icing up, it means that the defrost timer, or the defrost heater is faulty. It really depends on where it is stuck, and you don't tell us that. If it is down where the filter is, you can get it with a magnet taped to a stick. If it is between the drum and the outer drum you may be able to open out a coat hanger and pull it towards the edge. Depending on the age of the dryer, it might be time for a full strip-down service and do some maintenance. Grease the bearings, oil the drum slides and remove all the lint that hides inside and causes 'Dryer Fires'. That sounds like an overheating problem. When the machine pauses, the blower fan stops running and that allows the heat to build up enough to trip the high level thermostat. You can test this by running a cool cycle. Drive belts don't squeak because they are made of rubber. Things that do squeak are rear drum bearing, front bearings or drum slides, idler pulley wheels or the tension springs. The machine needs a full strip down, cleaning, de-fluffing and lubrication.
