Shifting on my Hobart N-50 mixer. I just pulled the switch/shift cover. yellowish-brownish grease in places, but a few gears looked dry. Tried shifting / no success.

You are in for an adventure. The first step is to find the N-50 Service Manual online and download it. Trouble shifting speeds is rarely a simple matter of lack of grease. If your mixer shifted before removing the switch plate, then there is a post that shift lever engages which in not being engaged properly. On the other hand, if that is not the problem, the transmission case must be removed. Shifting gears involves moving the tumbler yoke assembly. If you are extremely lucky the yoke's spring has become detached and re-attaching it will be all that is needed. Of course the spring will be in place and you will have to deal with all the grease and investigate the cause. This is a good time to replace the old grease as well.

Hobart n -50 where do i put grease in, machine makes a grinding noise

If your N-50 is making a grinding noise there is a strong (almost certain) possibility that the cause is more than just needing more grease. The sources of the noise are from the transmission case (front portion of the motor housing) and/or the planetary (where the blade attaches). A search online should turn up the N-50 Service Manual. With luck, it may be that the two adjustments specified in the Service Manual will do the trick Three things come to mind regarding the noise: 1) If simply greasing the planetary does not do the trick, then 2) There are two adjustments to the transmission detailed in the Service Manual. And if that is not the cure 3) The transmission housing will need to be removed to find the source of the grinding. This is where the grease is truly encountered.

BBeater scraping back bottom of bowl

Is the planetary still off before the taper pin is in place? It's a shot in the dark but if everything lines up, I can think of two possibilities: 1. The taper pin in backwards, and 2. The shaft hole in the planetary is out of round.

My D300T motor is turning but shaft is not. How do I open the shaft area.

Weird sound usually means something in the gear box. I found a copy of the manual which includes many exploded drawings; perhaps something in here might help: http://www.bakedeco.com/ebay/pdf/HobartD300.pdf
