No access

try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use this file recovery software called asoftech data recovery to recover your files.http://www.asoftech.com/adr/

I can not open data

Is it listed in your setup/BIOS? Is it listed in the device manager, or recognized by the OS? If any or all of these are yes, I would say you have a bad drive. If you can access the drive without complete disassemble then power it down and try removing the drive and reinstalling it. So with your phrasing I have to ask if this computer even boots past the setup/BIOS screen. If your getting into your OS, then you have some viruses or you just need instructions on how to use the computer?

I have a extra hitachi

1. Decide which hard drive will be the startup (master) drive. If this drive was the startup drive previously, or if it's a new hard drive, then the master drive designation will already be set.
2. To change the designation of a new drive to be a slave drive, skip to step 4.
3. To change the designation of an existing drive to be a slave drive: Turn off the computer, unplug the power cord, remove the drive from its drive bay, and disconnect the drive from its power cord and ribbon cable.
4. Check the hard drive documentation or the label on the drive itself for master/slave jumper settings.
5. Find the jumpers on the circuit board of the drive. Jumpers are plastic plugs with metal sleeves that form a circuit between a pair of pins. Jumper locations are labeled on the board with a J followed by a number (such as J20).
6. Use tweezers or very small pliers to remove or reposition the jumpers to the configuration shown in the documentation or on the disk label.

I connect hitachi hts424040m9at00 40GB

I assume this is an internal hard drive. If it is not being detected by windows, you need to go to disk management. refer to this link to learn more about disk management : http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_management.htm
When you are in the disk management menu, you need to create a partition and format this partition (if the disk is new). If the disk already has data in it, then disk management will make Windows recognize the drive.

I bought a

As long as you are sure the hard drive is connected properly with SATA cables to the motherboard and has power from the power supply unit, and that the drive is working, you can enter the BIOS on computer startup and modify the "boot device" look in "primary boot device" for a name matching that of your hard drive (probably "HITACHI .....) If it is there select it as the primary device and hopefully it will boot and ask you to install windows. If it is not there the drive may not be connected or it may need to be replaced. Hope this helps!

Hello, quick question: I have a

Yes! There is such an adapter. Look here for IDE/SATA to USB: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2329300&CatId=3770

Obviously, you don't have to buy this product or buy from Tiger Direct; this is just an example of the type of product you're looking for.

If you're comfortable working inside your desktop, then you should check out this product which is much cheaper: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2329310&CatId=3770

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa.
