My hitachi 320GB external hard drive is not
When this happens, usually the drive is a total loss. You can check this by connecting to a USB to hard drive dongle, and connect to a windows PC, IF it works here you may simply need to reformat back on the Apple. If it doesn't then the drive is bad.

Sorry to inform you, but this is the end of your hard disk. GET A BACK UP as sooner as possible, if the disk is still working don't shut it down and move your data.
Sorry for the infos.
In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post.

When I connect USB it system detects the hard drive but could not
Try it on another computer and see if you can open it up there. If it's still showing as 0 bytes then it's obviously a problem with the usb drive.
If it's a thumb drive (or some other solid state storage) then you're probably going to have to look into a data recovery service as they're going to have to remove the memory chips to access the information.
If it's an external case with a hard drive inside it then the best bet would be to open up the case and pull the drive out. Try connecting the drive to a computer (make sure the computer is off, then turn on) that way or through another external case. Be careful though, if the drive is making any funny noises or clicks then you could be damaging it and you'll need to again, take it somewhere for data recovery, also if the drive is not spinning at all (it's easy to tell) then you'll have to take it in. There's a chance it'll work fine though and your external might just be bad

Unable to boot up, drive makes clicking sound
Yes that is known as the click of death. I have a Seagate Barracude that just started the same thing. I'm assuming I will not be able to retrive any data off the drive. What I'm doing on it though is wipeing the drive clean - partitioning it a few times/ formatting and then will return for an exchange. Suggest you try same (depending on age) by using an external housing. you can get them pretty cheap on ebay

My drive is fine but my laptop died.
An easier way of doing this is purchasing a 2.5" USB external casing (it's a cheap option too). You can then connect it to another computer via USB and backup your data. From what I can see it's an IDE drive rather than SATA, so make sure you get an IDE compatible casing, if you chose to do this.
Here is a good example of one:

2.boot computer into bios settings
3. set a new bios password and check lock computer
4.while the computer is on slide the HDD in the laptop again.
5. save and exit bios
6.fortunately in the next boot you will get your hdd back

How to change the password in bios
There are two ways.
First, if you know the BIOS password then most probably you know and would not have come to Fixya.
Two, if you do knot know it or have forgotten, which is most likely the case, then you must turn the laptop upside down and open up the bottom plates till you find a button cell. Remove the button cell for a few minutes and then reinsert it and screw back all the plates you opened. Turn the laptop upside up and power on. You will find that the BIOS password has been removed.

you can purchase a huge range of drive interfaces from your local computer store.
Make sure you get an interface, or USB external case to suit the drive interface ( PATA or SATA ) plug the ting in and connect to your pc through a usb port... then I would copy the entire drive contents onto another drive..
