The cheapest way will be to buy the same drive again. Spare parts are very scarce and for that reason very expensive. When you want yo save the data on your drive, and you think the board is defect, think this will be the cheapest option.

have you anything on the disk ? i assume not because you have tried formatting it, but if you have create a back up. go to your dos command window and run chkdsk on the external disk. this may tell you something. run a disk check program on it, eg seatools, hdtune. hdsentinel. i suspect that the hard disk is critically damaged (but maybe not). this might tell you if and which sectors are damaged. if the disk is within warranty you should contact hitachi and try to get a replacement as soon as possible. Formatting the drive, depending upon the type of format, is destructive of data. There are specialized recovery programs that can sometimes save the old FAT tables, but chances are you are out of luck. Many times these external drives fail because they are not built to handle the heat and shock/vibration that comes with being encased and mobile. Often it is not the drive itself that fails, rather the SATA/USB controller in the enclosure. I have seen many individuals pull their "failed" drives out of the enclosure, install it internally, and find all the data is still there.

Sounds like a disk error and it cant read the start of the drive. If it still detects it you might be able to repair it with a partition recovery or partition repair tool available online.

Make sure you haven't selected the wrong input using the input or source button on your remote control. You may have to cycle through several choice until you get to TV or Tuner or something similar. Cycle slowly, some TV's take a few seconds to render the picture one you choose a different input source.

More than likely the software is available at Hitachi's website, so check there or give them a call if you cannot find it through the website. They may be able to email the software to you or provide the link by email. If the software is licensed in some fashion, they may ask for the serial number of your external hard drive, so you might want to have that handy just in case.

Hello Stellafox, The issue you describe is generally a simple hardware failure but without further diagnostics it would be impossible to advise you as to where the failure resides. If you are technically capable, follow the directions below, if you even have to consider how capable you are, take it to a repair shop and ask them to try these steps. First, connect the device to a different computer, listen carefully for clicking scratching or ticking sounds, if you hear any report back including your country and state/province and I can recommend a nearby recovery facility. If not proceed to check within computer management(Windows) or in disk utility(Mac) to see if the device is registered. If not remove it from it's enclosure (voiding any warranty) and repeat this step. If the device does not show up on Disk Management on two or more devices, striped of it's enclosure, again refer back and I will recommend a data recovery facility near you. If it shows up at either stage, the problem is most likely logical in nature, check the size of the drive and ensure it roughly matches the stated size(won't be exact). If it does but the partitions show up as RAW or UNALLOCATED, advise and I can recommend a software solution for recovering your files, if it does not show up or shows up in a place like Device Manager but either does not show up or shows up as 0GB and or Uninitialized but refuses to initialize, again hardware failure we can connect you with a pro. If you are looking at a software solution, ensure the computer you are connected to has sufficient space to recover all of you files or purchase and connect a new drive of appropriate size before proceeding. We can recommend software for this purpose or if you'd prefer a company who can dial in remotely and assist you with the recovery process. Of note if you got to the step where the drive is removed from the case and it not only showed up but also has access to your files, back them up to a second device then purchase a USB/eSATA enclosure to put the drive into as the failure was in the enclosure and not the drive. You can\'t get back the data from encrypted hard drive whatsoever. There are various recovery utility that claims to successfully recover data from the encrypted drive but none of them would actually able to recover files. I take it that you've forgot your bios password.. Take off your side cover of PC (check this through your manual if you have it) and look for a round shiny battery. near there you will see 'clr cmos'. Next to that you may see 3 pins with 1 jumper. Disconnect power source. Take the jumper off it's present 2 contacts the 'jump the centre on and the one that was open. Count 5 secs and reverse back to original 2 jumpers. Your bios will tell you ( when you reboot) that cmos needs setting. Your password has now gone from your bios. I you have a password on your hard-drive try downloading Hirens Boot Disk 15. The password is your responsibility. If you forgot that's a bad mistake, or if it's belongs to someone else ask them.

It depends on the OS you use ! On most versions of Windows, right click on the letter of the drive, then click "properties". In the new window, go to "Tools" tab, and click "Verify now". Check the the two repair boxes and run the program. (terms may vary according to version of Windows). Windows will ask you to reboot to launch the analysis of your disk. If this does not fix the problem, you'll need to further investigate with more elaborated tools, available free of charge on the net.

Hi Anon Try connecting your hard drive to another computer and running the windows disk tools to test your drive, make sure that the options to automatically fix errors are selected, if this does not work then a suite of hard drive tools from Acronis (disk director) or Paragon (Hard disk manager) may be able to fix your problem.

This has nothing to do with the drive. If you used a program to secure the data on your drive, only the same program, with the correct password, can unlock your data. You are the only one that can guess what password you used. There is no other way. If you don't need the data anymore, you should be able to wipe the drive and give it a format. You will lose all data for ever if you do so.
