click start control panel administrative tools computer management device manager scroll down universal serial bus controllers you could see a yellow question / exclamation mark? ! or a red X

you will need to update/reinstall drivers

right click to reinstall drivers

if you can see your usb drive but its not working

ports (com&lpt) right click update driver if this fails to fix the problem

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red white green black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems for a computer and its parts

it is like putting a new stereo in a totalled car,

sometimes wires get loose and do not make good conection make sure wires are making good contact to your hard drive. and to motherboard . first. and as always unplug pc first.

The cheapest way will be to buy the same drive again. Spare parts are very scarce and for that reason very expensive. When you want yo save the data on your drive, and you think the board is defect, think this will be the cheapest option.

have you anything on the disk ? i assume not because you have tried formatting it, but if you have create a back up. go to your dos command window and run chkdsk on the external disk. this may tell you something. run a disk check program on it, eg seatools, hdtune. hdsentinel. i suspect that the hard disk is critically damaged (but maybe not). this might tell you if and which sectors are damaged. if the disk is within warranty you should contact hitachi and try to get a replacement as soon as possible. (assuming it is a hitachi/hgst [wd] product) 21.january.2015

Formatting the drive, depending upon the type of format, is destructive of data. There are specialized recovery programs that can sometimes save the old FAT tables, but chances are you are out of luck. Many times these external drives fail because they are not built to handle the heat and shock/vibration that comes with being encased and mobile. Often it is not the drive itself that fails, rather the SATA/USB controller in the enclosure. I have seen many individuals pull their "failed" drives out of the enclosure, install it internally, and find all the data is still there.

Make sure you haven't selected the wrong input using the input or source button on your remote control. You may have to cycle through several choice until you get to TV or Tuner or something similar. Cycle slowly, some TV's take a few seconds to render the picture one you choose a different input source.

Download Recuva, and run the deep scan on the drive, it should be able to detect the deleted files, make sure to save them to a different drive than the one you are recovering from.

Sounds like a disk error and it cant read the start of the drive. If it still detects it you might be able to repair it with a partition recovery or partition repair tool available online.
