1. From what I read it may be the port drivers that are not installing for the USB port you have connected you hard drive to.2. Check the manufacturers site for driver updates and hard drive requirements 3. It may be that the driver are not for the OS that you have or you may have to download them.4. Try another cable ( USB)5. Last it may be the internal electronics of the drive itself that may not be writing or reading the information sent by the pc to the port .You may need a new case with new electronics ( hard drive main board).

if your computer came with a motherboard disc the drivers could be on it click start control panel administrive tools ,computer management ,device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x right click to reinstall drivers or if you can see your usb but its not working: ports(com&lpt)right click update driver" sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable, just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again, check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems also make sure the computers Ram and Cmos battery are securely seated hope this helps

How to use Disk Management To start Disk Management:

1. Log on as administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
2. Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
3. In the console tree, click Disk Management. The Disk Management window appears. Your disks and volumes appear in a graphical view and list view. To customize how you view your disks and volumes in the upper and lower panes of the window, point to Top or Bottom on the View menu, and then click the view that you want to use.

Even though the drive is recognized, it is probably not formatted, which means you can't store any files on it yet. You will have to format it before any data can be written to it.

1. Open Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management

2. In the LEFT PANE, find the "Storage" heading, then find "Disk Management" and click it. Windows will show you a graphical representation of all of the hard disks installed in your system. Find the new Hitachi drive in the UPPER-RIGHT PANEL, and RIGHT-CLICK it.

NOTE: BE SURE YOU CHOOSE THE CORRECT DRIVE IN THIS STEP! If you choose the MAIN drive, the one where Windows is installed, you could DESTROY THE DATA on it and render your system UNBOOTABLE. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!

3. When you RIGHT-CLICK on the NEW HITACHI HDD, you will see the "Format..." option. Click the "Format..." option and follow the prompts to format the new HDD.

4. When the FORMAT operation is finished, you will be able to use the new HDD to store files.

Have over 5 here for Backups . lots of causes, for sure bad drive, or missing drivers.. bad HW hardware or BAD software SW. NO PC stated, NO OS stated, windows/chrome/Linux/android? its at lease 10 years old , see posts back that far. not good old HDD,this old. sold during W7 era. 2009. The drive has 3.5" HDD that needs lots of power (Amps) to start up that big motor inside, and is first thing to learn . 2amps it needs, ok? so if pack is missing it will never startup on any USB port, not rated for 20x standard USB load factors. some laptops only do 0.1amps (100mA) and are useless to startup any hdd motor of any kind. see why here. and see a better extremal solution cheap.! $10 http://www.pcdied.com/external-hdd.html

Check the device manager when it is connected and look for indications that something is wrong with the device also check the event viewer log in the system folder for any errors related to the issue and let us know.

They have not supported Vista since April 2017. So I would recommend upgrading to at least Windows 7, as Microsoft will probably support it until 2020.I just installed Windows 7 on an old HP Celeron (Celeron processor is like one notch better than a Pentium 4). It works pretty well - turned off all the Win7 Aero junk to make it run a little faster. I can even watch YouTube on it and stuff! lol.Good luck.
