It's easy once you figure it out. Unscrew the top and then push down on the exposed screw threads with your thumb. The internal "guts" slide out the bottom.

Maybe this will help: . I tried pushing buttons, pushing and holding buttons, pushing buttons together, shaking it, shaking it while holding buttons... nothing worked. Out of frustration more than anything I whacked it on the palm of my hand... and presto! It works. I guess you just need to use the Fonzie method.
