Years ago, upon my suggestion,
I am running Newcolor 5000 on an XP box. There are some issues but it does run fine. I just ignore the "out of memory" messages that pop up and keep scanning. Upon booting, the device manager will try to install the scanner (that needs to be on to be recognized). It will need to be cancelled seven times. This happens every boot, not ideal but it's how I do it. For a while I was dual booting to W2K but now just tolerate the eccentricities of Newcolor.

Scanner will not turn on.
the scanner might actually still be good, try changing the power supply cord, or try using it on another device to ensure that its still good. if it does work, them there might be a problem with your scanner's power supply unit

Will a Linotype Hell Ultra 2 Saphir run on a pC?
Yes. Just got mine running on Windows ME. Problem is getting the SCSI set up. Once you get that done, I used Vuescan (http://www.hamrick.com/) and it works. Slow, but functional. I have yet to get scans of the full scanner screen (10 x 14 inches). But 8 x 10 is working fine.

All my scans come out black
I don't have the same scanner but the same problem and I unplug the scanner from the back of it and waited 1 minute and plugged it back in and it worked. It just might need to rebut itself.

Linoscan manual
Setup is easy just plug in the cable in to the scanner and the other end of the cable plugs in to the back of the computer and make sure your computer is off. After you plugged them both in, plug in your power supply for your scanner then turn on your computer and it should do the rest. Btw, I’m available to help over the phone in case u need at

Scanning lines
Check this link for a bit of info about the scanner.

I agree: Heidelberg no longer support the model so you will have a lot of trouble finding spares - I searched a lot and the only place you can find these now seems to be e-bay.
I would be tempted to say get a new scanner, but it is just possible that replacing the lamp if you could get one or cleaning the inside may help, but a scanner usually only has a few years life in it.
Just possible the lamp is standard, if you can get to it and get a part number from it, perhaps we could find one online.
Hope this helps :)

Upgraded to MAC OS X; is there a compatible driver?
This scanner was released back in the late 90's, before Os X was released. Heidelberg discontinued support of all but their high end Nexscan scanners. So unfortunately, newer drivers were never made for this product.
