if the batteries are new and the battery terminals are clean and not corroded or broken, and the battery polarity is correct when they were installed. There must be a fault in the internal circuits of the scale, and a technician with the right tools, training, and experience will be needed to repair it. Maybe time for a new scale.

Although the HealthOMeter.com site no longer posts a user manual for the BFM588DQ-81 scale, they do have a different model scale, BFM955-60, instruction manual that will work for the BFM588 because all the setting buttons are identical. You can download the manual for free at their site. Go to the site, under "Service & Support" setect "Instruction Manuals", then select "Body Fat Scales". Once there, find and select the BFM955-60. It will open as .pdf document and you can save it to your computer and print it out. It worked for my BFM588 scale for which I had lost the user manual.

If the scale is moved, you must reset the scale back to zero in order to get an accurate reading.

I have a Health-o-meter but not the same model. Mine still has the instructions pasted (loosely) to the bottom. The secret is that you must initially press the lower (left or right side) corer for just a second or two. That causes a few dashes and then the scale reads 00.0. Then get on the scale and get your reading. Alternative behavior: If you initially press the corner for more than a few seconds it will cycle through User Numbers one through four. If you use that feature it remembers your weight from the last time so you can see the difference.

Maybe you don't need to check your weight. I don't know you, but if you are happy with yourself, Throw out the scales. Then you won't have to listen to the noise.

I found one and it wouldn't come on either after I put new batteries in it, I took it apart and cleaned the battery terminals with some sandpaper. I put batteries in it and it turned right on.

I'm just guessing at this point, the "L" probably stands for "Low" as in "Low Battery". Don't discard the old one,just switch it out with a new one and see what happens.

I don't know specifically for this model, but for most like this, 300 or 330lbs is typical. To test a working scale for its max capacity, let a heavier friend try it or carefully hold a weight in each hand and stand very still when its a digital scale. A gallon plastic milk container weighs about 9lbs, so one in each hand,even if filled with water will give you an extra 18 lbs of testing room. You can also let the heavier friend or other person hold the weights to help you test the upper limits.

To reset a profile hold down the number of the profile you want to reset (1-4) then hold down the select button at the same time. The scale will ask you if you want to erase. Then you can recreate your profile.

Just push either the #"1" or "2" user button and hold it down. The display will flash the height numbers. Hit the Up or Down arrow to change the flashing "5" to a six, etc. Then hit the "set" button to "enter" your choice. This advances the display so that you can now change the inches, gender and age. You're good to go!
