There will be a normal odor as the engine cranks until enough gas is in the intake for starting. Gas generators do not have an ignition 'on-off' switch, they use a fuel solenoid to turn on and off the gas to start and kill the engine. If you are uneasy, your local gas company should be able to check engine compartment for leaks. Your electrician should have run a set of wires out to the generator from the transfer switch. The unit actually comes with a fuse holder, fuse, terminal connector, and jumper wire for installing these wires to the t1 or t2 terminals in the transfer switch. The dc wires will be the ones coming out of the battery charger, 1 of them will have a red marker around it, that is your dc positive. The 2 wires coming out of the opposite side of the battery charger is actuall your ac connection.

It is very likely you are having a problem with the low oil pressure switch or the high temperature switch. Both of these are connected to the No.85 wire which in turn goes back to the control board. If the temperature exceeds the predetermined level (apprx 305 degrees F) the high temperature switch will then ground wire 85 causing the unit to shut down. Same thing with the oil pressure switch, if the oil pressure switch goes below 10 psi the low oil pressure switch will ground wire 85 causing the unit to shut down. To determine which is causing the problem disconnect first the low oil pressure switch (Located by the oil filter) and start unit if it contunues to run after 10 seconds and does not shut down then the oil pressure is the problem. Then you must use a mechanical pressure gauge connected where the low oil pressure switch is to determine if you actually have less than 10 psi of oil or if the low oil pressure switch is just bad. Try the same thing with the high temperature switch also located close to the oil filter if you disconnect it and it continues to run more than 10 seconds then you have and engine that might be overheating. Anything that gets caught in the air intake on the generator itself ill cause this unit to overheat, I've seen it **** garbage in through the air intake and cause the unit to overheat because of poor air flow. If their are no restrictions and you have good air flow than chances are you have a bad high temperature sensor.

You have a problem with the carb float valve. It is no longer sealing causing fuel to continue to flow into the float bowl after it is full. It may be dirty, out of adjustment or just need to be replaced because old and worn out.

Pull the no 1 and no 4 wires off the voltage regulator and apply 12 vdc from the battery to them + to no 4 - to no 1. start unit and see if its putting out at least 60 VAC. If it is then you have a bad voltage regulator. If itis not then you have to investigate the brushes, stator, and rotor.

If generators are not used regularly, they need the their magnetic field to be charged (or flashed). This can be done by plugging an electric motor into the socket while the generator is running and spin the motor by hand. The hand-spun motor will push some electric current back into the generator and magnetize it enough to start it.

Look in the manual. There is likely something about field flashing the magnetic field. The easiest way to do this is to.
1) start the generator
2) plug an electric drill into the generator (without drill bit)
3) make sure drill is set to forward direction (if a reversable drill.
4) pull the trigger on the drill.
5) If the drill does not start, spin the drill's chuck clockwise (When looking down at the chuck from the drill bit end). Spin counter-clockwise if holding it like a pistol and pointing away from yourself.
6) Do this several times (hard) until the the generator will kick in and suddenly make the drill spin at full speed.
Be careful not to drop the drill or poke someone with it as you celebrate success.

I had an 8kw unit from Guardian I put in last year. The starter was defective direct from the factory. If your battery is at full charge and voltage good, with tight connections to the starter it may boil down to the starter itself. Call the warrenty dept. for the company and tell them it should be covered.

the fact that it's tripping the breaker on the genset would suggest the the problem is not at the generator but rather on the load side of the genny before anything else I would seperate the generator from the rvs electrical system and apply some other load some thing fairly heavy toaster heater ect.. the fact that it's stopping the generator is a little unusual but it could just mean that the electriacl panel has a relay that keeps the generator running when the power dies so does the generator .load test should point you in the right direction I,ve owned 4 motor homes and when I wish you luck I realy mean it.

If you dont find a solution here. Call Generac in Waukesha WI. and get the number for Robert Schwalm Co. He is the best in the Country for Generac I used to be #2 but I havent worked on all the new Generacs. Give me an old RV unit and no one is faster!

Your control board is faulty. Try to power up the ingnition coil as well as your fuel pump. If this does not get the engine running then you have major engine problems.

Before starting the genset remove the air filter and check the throttle plate on the carberator, it should be closed. If it is opened, then you choke coil is worn out and needs to be replaced.

being a 2 stoke there isn't much to tune up. the MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER IN A 2 STROKE IS GAS AND OIL MIXTURE,too much oil will foul plug no big deal. replace plug. too little oil in gas will wash the crome lining in the cylinder off and you won't have the compression need to burn the gas any more. once you get that straight crank the saw and run it wide open, it should be quick to react to the trigger, that is no stumbling until it finally turns up. if it don't have a small screw driver handy and turn down the screw for the run mixture until it runs as fast as it can. also let idle. it should run on idle as long as you don't turn switch off. if it loads up and quits turn in idle screw until it does idle right . that's about it. also always make sure chain on bar isn't sagging too much when not running. a loose chanin will cause uneven wear on bar and make a crooked cut.keep chain sharp. they dull quick.NEVER leave gas in tank for long periods of time. after each use drain tank and start until motor runs itself dry.

the instructions says the voltage regulator is automatic/digital. when you check the voltage is there any load on the generator? if applying load to the generator doesn't help, you can manually change the motor speed where the governor connects to the carborator, but it may change the frequency, but the regulator may fix it

I think that is the problem as well. Temporarily, you could just buy a tricke charger from the parts house and hook that up until your other one is changed. Rick

Is this an RV generator?

If you have to really choke an LP engine but it runs more or less normally once started you need to troubleshoot the demand regulator and the fuel supply lines (look for air leaks). I'd also check the fuel inlet pressure before the demand regulator.
