Just a thought..
Grab the upper-right corner of the screen and wiggle it back and forth, like you do when you open it. If the screen blinks on and off, it could be that the screen is cracked from twisting it each time you open the laptop, or the ribbon cable could have a break in it.
2003 PC, made, so is XP right???????????????
then you upgraded to W7 and sound is dead sure.
no OS stated, making any easy answer impossible.
yes uSb head phones work it has its own chip and drivers.
yes USB sound dongles work for the same reason as above.
I bet all that is really wrong is the OS was slammed.
came with XP and you upgrade it to w7 and sound is dead.
or new HDD, new W7 and same.
15 years old I bet it didnt run for 15 years, and not get messed up by repairs done wrong.

simple answer yes, if the USB device runs XP , most dont/
but NO OS STATED so no possible accurate answers possible.
I like to take my laptop apart and clean it and learn how is put together I use a small blower mini screw drivers a magnet to keep screws together I learn where the hard drive is and memory card is. my advice is if you decide to clean yours if you have the tools I would give it a try.
Normally this would be an easy fix if it had a cable style dc jack, but this model is soldered to the mother board. I have done 100's of them and will tell you that unless you know how to use that soldering iron correctly then perhaps you may want to take it to a shop to have It repaired. Before you even start look at the location that the DC jack goes to make sure there is no damage to the mother board. That is not a normal DC jack either, there are 9 locations that need to be soldered. I would suggest to take it to a repair shop
This sounds like Vid Chip failure, That has a very inexpensive mother board that can be replaced There is one listed on a popular site that sells used parts for $10.00 right now
OVERHEATING ~ me thinks ~ especially at the CPU where most heat is generated!
SEE this YOUTUBE to learn how to get the BOTTOM off... Take your Gateway to a tire shop and blow it out thoroughly!
Bring a MASK and a SOFT / OLD paint brush and round toothpick to assist.
Pay SPECIAL attention to the FAN area AND the DUST UNDER it!
SEE the PHOTO below AND NOTE the DUST UNDER the fan! Many times that fan gets IMPACTED with dust and dirt! So again ~ clean thoroughly!
Good luck!

Gateway AIO ZX4250 Teardown 1 3
Hummm... SO strange! both functions (surfing/typing) use the same keyboard... which rules out a intermittent/crushed keyboard ribbon cable.
The problems occur while typing WHAT? A word document? Perhaps her WORD program is at fault and needs a reinstall?
You didn't specify WHAT she was doing/typing so you make it extremely difficult to help you both!

Hi, First make sure your tape connections are correct, if everything is okay then you have/need, a new video card. Please leave me feed back: Malcolm Campbell, Thanks.
If you get sound coming in and out or crackling when wiggling the wires, there is probably a poor connection at either the plug end or the buds themselves.
