FIRST make SURE you have the latest software in YOUR computer and in YOUR Garmin before you load any maps or firmware.

To download the latest unit software visit Garmin website: www.garmin.com/webupdater
First you have to set up an account at Garmin using the serial number on your GPS. Once you do that you can download firmware update for free.
After installing WebUpdater once from the Garmin website, perform all future software updates from your computer. Simply connect your compatible Garmin device to your computer, then run WebUpdater from your computer's "Start Menu" by selecting "Start", "Programs", "Garmin", and finally "WebUpdater"
REMEMBER: It takes hours to do a complete a map update.
Unless you bought the Lifetime maps you may have to pay for current maps.
By the way, the correct Garmin approved power OR download cables are a must!!

The fuse may be gone in the charger. There's a ring, near the silver tip, of the plug that goes into the cigarette lighter. If you unscrew the ring the plug will come apart. Take care not to lose the silver tip as it may fall out. Replace the fuse and it may solve the problem.

get a new device, that one is shot

I recommend attempting a hard reset of your Garmin Nuvi 885.
Then I would upgrade the system software to the latest version. This often brings back unresponsive Nuvis.

Perform the Hard Reset

1. Power the unit off.
2. Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on.
3. Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?"prompt appears.
4. Press "yes" and the unit will reboot.
   

Upgrade the System Software

The upgrade software is a download available from Garmin. Installation steps are detailed here.

A Garmin Nuvi 1300 that won't start, or is acting erratically is symptomatic of having corrupt firmware.

To correct this, I recommend backing up your favorites, clearing all user data, and if it still is stuck, then updating your Nuvi firmware.

Follow these three steps to take to get your Garmin Nuvi 1300 running like new:

1. Back up your Favorites.
2. Perform a Hard Reset.
3. Download and then run Garmin WebUpdater to replace its firmware / system software.

I had the same problem and the only way I could get my unit working again was resetting by turning on and keeping finger on the screen then clicking 'yes' to 'reset all user data"

plug into comp and try again,if nothing then it needs a battery

you transfer them into the SD card

Go to www.garmin.com , you can purchase and download a update from there.

Download and install Garmin Express from Garmin. Plug your GPS into your computer. The software will identify your GPS and allow you to register it, as well as provide any current updates.

If your GPS is suddenly shut off check your device may be set to battery-saving mode. If you faced a battery issue, then replace the battery. go to the garmin site register your unit use the pc connect the usb cable to the phone it will self setup there is a software setup for the 1490t i did mine 2 days ago , still can't figure out the software for doing your own routing etc but to register it follow the above

Sorry, no free maps. I know I've tried. You either live with the old map or buy the latest version.
I bought the life time maps updates and I'm glad I did.
I've updated my maps at least 6 times.
New maps are about $70.
Life time maps are about $99 (when I bought mine)

Try it on a different computer: sometimes the USB connection is simply unable to provide sufficient power on some machines. If that fails then try a different USB lead as yours may be faulty. If the unit charges correctly in the car, then the USB socket on your Garmin is definitely OK.

Just connect the satnav to your computer with the mini USB lead. The narrow end goes in the back of the satnav and the other end in the USB port of your computer. You need to have the computer turned on and if the satnav doesn't turn on automatically turn it on also. It will take approximately 8 hours to charge.
