Hi
i have just tryed
you have to download the driver for the hard drive
go to the hard drive manufacturer web site , find the down load for you model hard drive and the imac operating system
download and run
Broken USB port
depending on the make/model...you will need to pry open the sides..
slowly along the gap..its got plastic locks holding the two halves together
Faulty drive
The clicking sound is often refered to as "the click of death". In most of the cases the sound indicates that the drive is getting to the end of its life.
I recommend getting another drive and back up all your essential information as soon as possible. Then, if you still have warranty on the drive, exchange it. Even if store warranty has run out, the manufacturer might still give warranty depending on the age. Even if the manufacturer's warranty has expired, your local Consumer Protection Act might back you up to get it exchanged any way.
I have an old Freecom external hard drive
If you checked with alternative cables, and on another computer, then your left with one option only. Removing the HDD from the casing. If the HDD is still working but the case is not. You need to remove it from the case and connect it to a computer directly. If once removed it is still not working you can try to put it in a sealed plastic bag and in a freezer for a day, the quickly try to connect it to a computer. If it is still not working you only other solution is to send it to a specialized company that will open it and read the data directly from the plates. This is done in a sealed environment (think high tech dust free rooms with people coverd in white)Thus it is expensive and usefull only id the data has a real value to you.

Broken usb
several things and solutions you can do.if it's just an external hdd you can rip it to bits and take the drive out and use it as an internal drive, or take it to pieces and get an external hdd caddy for the size of the drive (3.5" or 2.5") they are cheap enough to buy.

Ive been using my Freecom Mobile Drive Mg 1TB for
sure (buy a pC) LOLok , the first test is !does it spin, hear to case, whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrif not its dead or you lost power to it.same for all HDD.if dead, take it apart (out of warranty) and reset all internal cables.or remove the drive inside and test it.if drive good, good, if bad its toast.if the drive is really good, then the power pack in side is bad.so buy a new case , for the working drive.I make my own External drives. that way, its not magic and i can fix it and can pick the best cases made, i use fan cases.that run very cool, heat kills most drives, and 10x that on mostexternal drives, where heat is never ADDRESSED !
