It would be helpful to know the brand of refrigerator you have. Also, what was the original finish; enamel, stainless, etc? If your description is accurate, meaning you wiped the surface with a wet cloth, you may be dealing with a defective product that might well be covered by a factory warranty. Look in the yellow pages for a FACTORY AUTHORIZED service company. They will be the recipients of all the factory TSBs. (Technical Service Bulletins). Defective finishes and possible recalls will be covered by these TSBs.

It is best to consult your users manual first as controls are like humans nowadays. They are all different in programming features.
You may have set it for an illogical temperature or a component malfunction may have occurred and the alarms alerted you to that with an error code display. No error code =no malfunction and more than likely means a human error was made. I’m happy to assist further over the phone at

Check fans in freezer and near compressor. Is compressor running continuously or clicking on and off? If fans are running and compressor is running continuously, your problem is most likely within sealed system. That would require a technician and may not be cost effective to repair.
