Epson v500 Photo scanner was working but now gives a red light and whirring noise when opening the app installed on Mac - gives warning "cannot properly connect with scanner".

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try for your Epson V500 Photo scanner: Check the connections: Ensure that your scanner is properly connected to your computer and turned on. Check the cables and ports for any damage or loose connections. Restart your computer: Sometimes, restarting your computer can fix communication issues between your scanner and computer. Reinstall the scanner software: Try uninstalling and reinstalling the scanner software on your computer. You can download the latest software from the Epson website. Check for updates: Make sure that your scanner software and computer operating system are up to date. Try a different USB port: Plug the scanner into a different USB port on your computer and see if it makes a difference. Reset the scanner: Turn off the scanner and unplug it from the power source. Wait a few minutes and then plug it back in and turn it on. If these steps don't resolve the issue, it's possible that there may be a hardware problem with the scanner that needs to be repaired.

No light when scanner turns on; can bulb be replaced? where to buy?

Unfortunately the bulb on the scanner is not available on retail stores. Epson does not allow end users to take the scanner apart because they might not be able to put the scanner back in together because of the scanner's engineering design.

Unable to use film adaptor

Please do the following to scan slides or negatives in manual mode of the Epson TWAIN:
1) In the program you are working from, begin the scanning process. If working in full auto mode, as the scan begins you will see a message that reads TO CANCEL SCANNING IN FULL AUTO MODE AND SWITCH TO MANUAL MODE, CLICK CANCEL. At this point, click CANCEL, then MANUAL MODE.
2) You will now see all Epson Twain settings displayed. If the scanner has not previewed automatically, click the full page preview button (icon of a paper with one corner folded down).
3) Ensure the settings on the right hand side of the Twain are correct. For example, the DOCUMENT SOURCE for transparencies must be either TPU: COLOR NEGATIVE FILM, TPU: MONOCHROME NEG or TPU: POSITIVE FILM.
FILM here indicates that the item being scanned is transparent to light; this setting is also used for slide scanning. Positive indicates that the image is in true colors (ie the grass is green and sky is blue), whereas negative indicates reversed colors, as produced in some photo finishing processes. (If you are scanning a black and white slide in true colors, choose TPU: POSITIVE FILM as the DOCUMENT SOURCE and BLACK AND WHITE PHOTO as the IMAGE TYPE.)
If the DOCUMENT SOURCE is flatbed, the scanner will not activate the backlight in the transparency unit. If the DOCUMENT SOURCE is greyed out and you cannot select a TPU option, close the twain, reseat the power/communication cable connecting flatbed to TPU, then re-open the twain and try again.
4) Ensure the other twain settings are correct for the type of scan you are doing.
IMAGE TYPE should be color photo for all positive or negative color transparencies, or BLACK AND WHITE PHOTO for monochrome transparencies.
DESTINATION is unimportant, however you should select a RESOLUTION appropriate to what you plan to do with the scans. (There are no hard and fast rules for DPI. As a general guideline, if you are saving scans at original size, a resolution ranging from 400-600 DPI should capture enough information to faithfully record the image. If the slide or negative will be enlarged, you will need to increase this DPI accordingly. We have no guidelines on this; you will need to experiment and view the output to gauge the appropriate input DPI from the scanner.)
PREVIEW. If your scanner is doing an AUTOMATIC THUMBNAIL PREVIEW, the slides will automatically preview and appear in boxes on the left side. Here, you can select or deselect the slides you wish to scan.
If you recieve a message that the scanner could not find the film, click the CONFIGURATION button and uncheck AUTOMATIC THUMBNAIL PREVIEW FOR FILM, then OK, and try the PREVIEW button (page with corner folded down) again.
In this mode, you will have to manually marquee or crop the slides you wish to scan. Use the left mouse button to lasso one slide inside a box made of dotted lines, then click scan. Only the selected area will scan. Repeat this process (manually crop then scan) for as many slides or filmstrips are on the bed.
5) Click CLOSE once scanning is complete. The images will now transfer to the application in use.

My epson scanner 3170 is flashing a red light and

This happened to both mine and my sister's 3170. The plate holding the belt pulley wheel is held by two very small plastic flanges. At between a year to a year and a half the flanges fatigue and break causing the forward pulley wheel to break free. With the belt no longer able to turn the scanner won't initialize, the lamp won't light and the red flashing light comes on. The fix is rather simple though. Simply drill a small hole through the bottom of the case and place a small metal screw through with the screw head placed so that it overlaps the pulley wheel base thus holding everything down snugly. Fixed both scanners with this fix. In my opinion, just poorly engineered and perhaps even "designed in obsolescence". Most people would simply toss it and buy another considering what it would cost to send it in for service. You might even get charged for a new lamp that you didn't need. That was what Epson Service diagnosed the problem as over the phone.

Cannot communicate with scanner

Yep - I had the same problem. The issue is the cheap USB wire provided by Epson. It's too thin and isn't very well shielded. Use another one and you should be fine (or try keeping the wire away from other wires/sockets).

Hope that helps. :)

Epson Perfection 1200 Scanner Driver Needed for Windows 7

I posted this for another user but i'll post it here too,

I remember looking for hours for a driver for my Epson 1200 scanner back when I upgraded by dad to Vista 64 Bit, eventually I found one. Just today I upgraded him to Windows 7 64 bit and remembered I couldn't get it to work, luckily I was able to dig up the driver I used for Vista 64. Worked great in Windows 7.

I can't remember where I found it so I can't credit the person who made the driver unfortunately, however i've uploaded it to Rapidshare for you to download. Here is the link:

http://rapidshare.com/files/324940248/epsonScan_1.0_Per1200Win64eu.zip.html

Just open up the zip file and run the setup. :)

Hope this helps, Merry Christmas!

Unable to write to file

I had the same problem and fixed mine without re installation. Even though the error does not indicate it very well, the application could not write to the destination. The EPSON Scan application has a destination in two places. One under configuration, in my case, correct. However, a more buried location, next to the Scan button, press the arrow to edit more settings. There, you will find another destination, in my case, incorrect ( a folder that did not exist). Change the setting to a folder that does exist, it should work. Check out my fix here, detailed with pictures. Thank you. Hope this helps someone.

Makes clicking sound

Does it make the noise even when disconnected from the computer? Try to unplug it from the computer but leave the power connected (if it is a model with separate power and data connection) and see if it still makes the noise.

If it does then it is a hardware problem and it will need repairs. If it doesn't then its something in your software attempting to talk to the scanner incorrectly. You can try reinstalling the software for the scanner to ultimately test.
