The water heater has stopped working, is it the element or boiler and how can i tell which it is?

ECM machines have a water level float in the water tank. You need to check if it is low on water first!

Plumbing espresso machine

if this machine has a tank you fill for the the water it most likely will need some sort of lvl probe and inlet fill solanoid installed. best to check with manufacturer and see if your model originally had a model that could be hooked directly to water if not i would contact the company and see if they have the parts and if the control board in the machine has a fill circuit.

Not regular steam

First make sure that the nozzle is absolutely clean... If it is so, its most likely a problem with the mechanical steam valve spring. It could be that the spring is broken or even a pivot screw has come loose... You may need to open up the valve to check and clean

I turn the ECM Giotto on, the light comes on but

Try this open the steam valve when you turn the machine on, leave the valve open until it starts to hiss with steam, then turn off valve. If that works then the vent valve is sticking and needs to be replaced.

How do I change the

Hi sgiordano8,

To change the gasket on your ECM Giotto Espresso Machine kindly follow the procedure below:

1. First, please remove the drip tray.

2. Using a flat screw driver lever it against the inside of the group head and the outside of the shower filter. The shower filter and gasket will drop out.

3. An then to reinstate the filter and new gasket you have to insert the shower into the new gasket. Make sure that the flat side of the gasket is facing down.

4. Next, take the portafilter and remove the coffee filter.

5. Followed by placing the gasket and shower set in the portafilter and load into the group by applying upward pressure and turning, as if loading into the machine normally.

6. Finally, turn the portafilter around so it goes beyond the right angle position.

Hint:

What you really need to do, if the gasket is hard, is to chip out the old one with a small chisel. Once it cracks and a fair sized piece falls out, use a flat screwdriver to pry out the rest of the old cracked bits of rubber until the rest of the gasket is removed.

If you try to do a brute force prying of the shower filter, I'm pretty sure the screw driver will puncture and damage the shower filter.

To replace the gasket, you need to put a tiny bit of dish soap or food grade lubricant on the outside of the gasket to lube it. Next, fit the gasket back into the groove by prying lightly with a flat head screwdriver so that it is seated all the way around. THEN, use the empty portafilter and use it to press the gasket back into the machine.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

ECM Giotto toggle (power) switch

i had this happen myself a few months ago, power switch blew, i took the machine apart took out the power switch, and visited a few local electrical component suppliers, its a standard switch but its 2 stage single throw switch, home depot/Lowe's don't carry this type. ended up going to 3 diff suppliers and finally found a commercial supplier that had it connected the new one and now its fine, works better than the old one ever did. just make sure you bring the broken switch with you when you go to show them, most good suppliers can match it and see if they have one like it in stock.

My Giotto Premium drops water

Did you find a solution yet?If your machine isn't plumbed in, so you have to fill the reservoir, I find it is easy to overfill, and the water runs out over the lip. I placed a fishing float with the long bit sticking up through the hole, so I can see when the water level is too low.

My 4 year old ECM

This very frequent problem. The machine boiler has on the top the so called air valve. This valve when the boiler heat is cold it in down position so when the machine start heating before build up pressure the air valve will leave all air from boiler to escape so it will not trap in the boiler and then after a small pressure in boiler this valve is press up and closed so to keep the steam pressure in the boiler.

So now you problem is that this valve due to scale and dirt it stuck up- closed and during first heat up the air is trap in the boiler and your pressure switch will stop heating up by the pressure of the air blocked in so it stop heating without any steam. So by open the steam valve the air will escape out and the pressure will go zero and start heating up again.

So if you leave the steam valve open while is heating up it will do whatever the air valve is doing.

So the solution is either clean the air valve or replace the rubber o ring on it or replaces the complete valve. Until you do that you can keep the steam valve open when you initially switch on the machine and close it only when you have the first steam out of it. Then the machine will work normal.
