The latching is normally dependent on the element working. If you have a multimeter, test continuity of the elements. replacing them is normally not easy as domestic toaster use crimped wires direct to the elements cassette. I have a brand new one in my garage for a Black and Decker toaster with 18 crimp wire tails. I used Dualit and Rowlett commercial toasters at my hotel in Cornwall, England, and they were easy to repair, but Domestic toasters are really a non repairable / replacement option. The heating element went out. This can happen on one side of the toaster or both. Your toaster is toasted!!

you need to take the bottom off the kettkle and then you will be able to get to the back of the switch and see how its attatched and remove fasteners as needed and one end of the wires will need to be taken off. dont throw anything out until you look at the new switch because sometimes you dont get some little attatchment and then u will have the old set-up. hope it goes well. let us know how you do.

Timer dials are easy to replace if you can find the part. Start with the manufacturer, but if that doesn't work trying Googling it. Any timer switch that will fit will work. It's just a simple switch. One nut to hold it to the casing and two wires to connect it. It usually doesn't matter which wire goes where, but note their order when you take out the old one (take a cell phone photo) just to be sure.

The selenoid has broken

1. Use the plug to rotate and pull out the plate 2. remove the two screws circled in yellow 3. Very carefully unclip the top of the handle, the clips are easy to break 4. remove the spring 5. unclip the black plunger, by squeezing the tabs underneath 6. disconnect the switch board 7. remove the screw circled in yellow 8. the whole assembly can now be removed from the housing

The control panel is the most likely cause.

Could be that the heating element is open and needs to be replaced.

buy a security set or drill and replace screws

they can blow at the same time turn the toaster on without toast and see if both elements light up if not consider a new toaster as the element and repair costs will exceed a new unit

take it back for a warranty replacement cannot be fixed so replace it or junk it

Most of the time it is indicating something is wrong. What? could be a thermostat, an overheating sensor, bad cabling inside, or just the element.
