Windows 98 it's dead, MS does not support it. Nor does HP (it's double dead) nor do any modern DVD or CD drive makers, now.(we run SATA now) only OLD PATA drives were made for 98 and most are dead now. some NOS parts exist, but finding the drivers for it and not getting a virus infection (malware) is near imposslble. most makers of old CD drives, PATA there support pages are LONG GONE. ;long ago. why not find a 2007 and newer PC> for dirt cheap and end the pain. of windows 98 and PATA and no USB ports and yeah more pain. all OS VISTA and older are DEAD, zero support. if H3LL bent on 98, find a seller of a CD-RW drive that promises comes with W98 drivers I see none.. not having the driver software is like car with no TIRES. find a PC like this. 2007 or newer is best (for a FUTURE) http://www.pcdied.com/cheaper.html

If you have a desktop computer but listing it as a laptop with a problem you will get the wrong information back to repair the unit so you need to take this out and resubmit it as the proper unit before anyone can give you the correct information!

w8000 a very old PC not supported by HP.windows 2000 support ended like 15 years ago.. W2k. is gone. w2k only runs on very old pcs with very old ACPI(power controls is that) this PC is only supported with XPnever 2000. the system OS unstated by you is corrupted. reload OS if the hdd is bad the reload fails. tell you that fact. or is infected as most are, not running W10 or Ubuntu 7.

its and HP, HP owns COMPAQ, all of it. for vast years. well it can only be these reasons, on this very old PC. its now not supported then you post lacking what OS you are running, making accurate answers impossible , so go to GENERIC mode. my guess the virus magnet called XP with zero support for 3 years./

3. BIOS has it turned off, sorry there are no bios books to answer that now, HP deleted them due to too old. after 10 years.
4. The software for the wifi , is 2 fold, the wifi driver must be good and the driver that makes the amber button must be good.
5. by good, it must match the OS you run. unstated by you.

that amber means 2 things, im in airplane mode, (no its dead.) means the driver is dead, or the chip is dead. or.... the chip will be dead if BIOS has it DISABLED in all cases. was this the real model>??? (tedios but works) 4: remove all hatches, find the wifi card, read the name on it, , now you know what it is so the driver match is easy, 5: PNP it. (using the internet) 6: use the F11 key a powerup and reload the whole OS from scratch,and bam it works (bios not off) keep in mind PNP cant work unless, you have internet., wifi dead, is no internet so PNP is dead. easy no? if you used a ethernet cable from LT to your router, bingo? and then saw gee i got internet now. and then did wifi update in device manager you might get lucky. luck happens, but with XP , rare. im sure the DM , device manager shows the wifi dead. why not post saying OS first. then ask for wifi fix help and have and ethernet cable in your and first. or other pc to get drivers. there is no other way. looks like 5 chips used on 1 PC. see? see that ? its always a problem this I neversweat this. those are blink codes, learn to count them. if you pulled the CPU i bet you that you used the wrong heat sink compound.
