Black screen please help

the beeps are called BIOS BEEP codes. and is telling you what is wrong. does run with no battery removed do the BIOS screens work they MUST at all time. power on ,hotkeyed. is the fan running its old right, like an old car that will not start do you buy a new car? or buy a new battery? hummmmmmmm ever heard of a tech>/? those folks that diagnosis things? tried taking battery out, but failed to say it would not run only on the power pack. take it out and leave it out for now... be wise. so the HP logo works every-time you never said that yes./no.?? thAT hp LOGO IS A BIOS LOGO FROM HP. if yes the BIOS is ok. see? means the brain works the Ram is not dead and if you had pressed the BIOS hot key F1,F1, Esc, F10 what ever it is , it tells you what at boot in text. if you look there. if it stalls with good bios that means. bad HDD or bad OS. SOME NEWER PC HAVE f10 OR F11 RESTORE KEY IF YOU Press that, at power on ,it goes to restore mode. (means reload windows) oops HP retired this PC https://support.hp.com/us-en/retired-products that means in English clear, its NOT SUPPORTED NOW. no books no software no updates no NUTTN No anything, ! now you know why mom dump it.? LOL !!!! its a dead fish. or FORD, found on road dead. LT. why not report the beep codes clear and accurately,?????????????????????? run the LT with no battery and level it like that till cured. then, replace the COIN cell, no laptop this old has good 3vdc coin cell, impossible I bet. if the cell dies, as all do in 5 -10 years. the PC beeps with CMOS clock, NVRAM errors. the battery size of a coin, runs the Real time clock and the CMOS memory bank for the BIOS settings. if the coin goes dead BIOS GOES NUTS ANT TIME/DATE goes NUTS. if the beep codes say the HDD dont boot that usually means HDD is dead. the trouble with beep codes are that there are many BIOS used and many codes used. some are impossible to find. beeps are now gone we flash LED codes now. this is DT coin, LT is warped in plastic and 2 wires. see the COIN? http://www.pcdied.com/coin-dt.JPG beep? 1 long , 1 short, ? is COIN dead. http://www.bioscentral.com/beepcodes/compaqbeep.htm note the black hole OF BIOS code HELL here, its a bad place to be. for sure. one other test is go to BIOS page. see that time/date, year, settings. if way off the COIN is dead. learn to that a 1/2 dead coin can work now, then file and 1 hour later work, that is how batteries fail. they go MARGINAL sometimes.

Breakdown LCD CPU

wow a compaq forum , HP is correct forum nobody reads this.??? post to HP folks , i just stumbled on this. wow are you a 1 PC shop,. cant try other PS with that PROJECTOR Desktop or laptop. gee? so simple a test, or move PC to projector direct, omg works. and custom cabling,?????????oops RED FLAG that is what is wrong, ever read the VESA spec, on this, its tricky (2002 worst year ever) if you connect that pc direct and it works well gee the cabling is wrong! no distances stated, 10ft, 100ft 1001ft, what? btw ive built these systems my self, even from scratch, (chips) later, late 90s on. they also sell pro grade, buffered VGA, controllers. even from 1 PC and 5 projectors, there are buffers inside that make the signals perfect at all times. NO DISTANCE STATED! do be aware you can not run COAX that far in most cases. facts. (ig goes blurry, sync weak or goes to sleep mode) only buffers work. (video band widths are wide and high) One other system sold is a converter that converts VGA or DVI to a custom data stream at the PC then decodes that at the other end for perfect signal. THERE. one famous company that I bought from was BLACKBOX.(tm) talk to them been using them since day1, before went public stock. https://www.blackbox.com/en-us/products/black-box-brand-products/video-multimedia

Need to put system recovery disc's 2 disc set on flash since dvd drive has quit on me.

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001366.htm How to create a bootable Windows USB drive. A common use of a bootable USB flash drive is to use it to boot into Windows. Booting from removable media such as a USB drive allows you to perform diagnostics on a computer that is having trouble booting from the hard drive. You can also use the flash drive to install Windows, instead of using the Windows installation CD. This guide will outline making a bootable USB flash drive with Windows XP, Vista, or 7. Before we begin, it is important to note that the computer you want to use your bootable USB drive must be able to use a USB drive as a boot device. Most computers built since Windows Vista was released are capable of booting to a USB device. Prior to the Windows Vista time frame, it is hit or miss with motherboards. To determine if a computer is capable of booting to a USB device, access the computer's BIOS and check the bootable device list. If a USB device is listed, set the USB drive to be the first boot device. If you do not see a USB device in the list of bootable devices, your BIOS is not capable of booting to a USB device. Note: You may need to have your USB flash drive plugged in when you access the BIOS). Windows Vista and Windows 7 users To make a bootable USB drive for Windows Vista or Windows 7, you need to have Windows Vista or 7 installed on your computer. It is recommended that you have a flash drive of at least 4 GB in size, to store all the necessary files. Tip: Before you start, plug in the USB drive and backup any files you have stored on the USB drive. The drive will be formatted during this process and all files on it will be deleted. Note: You need to have a Windows Vista or Windows 7 DVD for these instructions to be successful. 1. Open an elevated Windows command line window by clicking Start, typing in cmd in the search text field, then pressing CTRL + Shift + Enter on your keyboard (at the same time). You can also access this by navigating to Start, All Programs, Accessories, right-click with your mouse on the Command Prompt menu item and select Run as Administrator. 2. At the command prompt, type cd c:\windows\system32 to change the directory to the Windows system32 directory. Ensure your USB drive is plugged in, type DISKPART, then press Enter. Type LIST DISK and press Enter. 3. You will see a listing of the disk drives connected to your computer. Find the disk number of your USB drive and type SELECT DISK [USB disk #], where "[USB disk #]" is the disk # for your USB drive. It should now state that your USB drive is the selected disk. If you're not sure what disk is the USB disk, eject the USB drive, perform step number 2 again, connect the USB drive again, and compare the results. Usually the USB drive will be the last drive. 4. Type in the following commands, one by one, pressing Enter after each command. CLEAN CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SELECT PARTITION 1 ACTIVE FORMAT FS=NTFS (may take a couple minutes, depending on the USB drive size) ASSIGN EXIT Keep the command prompt window open, but you can minimize it for a little bit. 5. You will now need your Windows Vista or 7 Installation DVD. Put the DVD in your computer's DVD drive. Open up My Computer and note which drive letter is assigned to your DVD Drive and your USB flash drive. 6. Go back to the command prompt window and type in D: CD BOOT (substitute your DVD drive letter for "D:", if necessary) and press Enter. Type CD BOOT again and press Enter. Lastly, type BOOTSECT.EXE /NT60 H: (substitute your USB flash drive letter for "H:", if necessary) and press Enter. 7. The last step is to copy the entire contents of the Windows DVD to your USB flash drive. To do this, in the My Computer window (opened in step 5 above), right-click on the DVD drive and select Open to view the contents of the DVD. Copy all the files and folders on the DVD to the USB flash drive. Your USB flash drive is now set up to be a bootable USB drive for Windows Vista or 7. How to or can boot from CD or DVD Good luck.

Hi. I half fell/ half bumped my laptop off a table HARD, but it landed on a mattress. Now it's making AWFUL noises, like a wheezing old man. Is it safe to use it? Scared it might be the fan....?.

bad hdd now, heads crashed,? Laptops do that easy but yes fan too... there are only 2 motors there, HDD and fan one is not happy./ (use ear close) the PC when it overheats it slows down (Intel inside magic) or even shuts off. so most PCs do not damage actual but is no good too use slow or dead. sorry no fire. PCs are fire proof, smoke some sure is possible but super super rare smoke, disktop PSU sure do make smoke some times.

New hard drive will not boot up on compaq cq56

Hi Lucas. The situation could be one of several things, depending on how the hard drive is attached to the computer.
  1. Inside. You had an old hard drive. you opened the computer, took the old drive out, put the new drive in, and turned it on.
  2. Inside - you had room for two drives and added this second one.
  3. Outside. You've hooked the drive up with a USB chassis and cable.
I'll start with lowest level, and my apologies if i include things that you're rolling your eyes about. Some folks know it inside and out, some don't.
  1. The new drive needs to have an operating system (OS) installed that works with your laptop (i.e. something like Windows or some flavor of Linux). Unless prepared ahead of time, the disk is just a place to store stuff. it will need to have the OS installed first before it can boot your computer up. This is the case, you'll need to start with OS install media (you should be able to boot off that from CD ROM or USB. From there, it'll give you instructions on how to load the OS onto the hard drive.
  2. The drive has an OS on it, but your computer may not know to look at that hard drive. In the early boot-up process, that is driven by the laptop firmware, there are set-ups for what order things are searched for boot media. You'll need to pause bootup early - it'll usually flash by and you'll likely press F2 or F4 to get into the setup menus. If, say, there's a CD rom in your CD drive, and the menu is set to first look for boot media on CD, then from Hard Drive, then it may go there, not be able to boot from the CD since it's a music CD, and stop. Or conversely be set to go to the HD first, not see it, and stop. You'd need to alter the boot order then to see if you can get the drive talked to .
  3. Also in those menus, there may be multiple SATA connections, that can be turned on or off. You may have to go through and enable the connection to that drive to ninny-slap the firmware in bothering to talk to it.
  4. Drive is in an external USB chassis. - Here again, you may have to go tell your boot firmware to enable, or add priority to booting from a USB device. Factory defaults are often 'no' to minimize vunerability to random malware on thumb drives.
  5. Hard drive is formatted, but not to what your PC can read. if it was, for instance, formatted for a Mac, the OS may not be able to deal with it without re-formatting it to something like FAT32 or NTFS. You'd need to start with the Hardware manager disk utilities to see if it can even see the disc (though you'll need a working OS to do this)
  6. You can also try moving the disc to another system to see if it works there. if it does, it could be that the connection in your computer is broken or not connected well.
  7. If this is right after a new OS install, sometimes this can be a bit confusing for the OS the first time it tries to boot. You might want to try booting in Safe mode to see if it can bootstrap it's way up. It may be needing to do a ton of updates and driver downloads.
That scratches the surfaces. having been through all variety of good and bad disc install experiences, I'll mostly counsel patience. Good Luck! D
