Check out your memory card and insert another known good working card to see if that takes care of the issue. If that also does not work there is something amiss with the camera. Try a reset of electronics to factory defaults.

It appears that you are missing a driver from Canon for your camera. FireWire is an unusual interface and most PCs were not plug-and-play for this interface.

If it has indeed been dropped, then sadly it is probably beyond economic repair

PIA to disassemble. Perform Google search for procedure/ might result in utube video if lucky.

If new as you say j ust take it back and replace it with one that works.

Software incompatibility is responsible. 64 bit OS often requires different drivers. If not available then you are SOL.

It is nearly 14 years old. I should give it an honourable retirement, and purchase a more modern replacement.

What information is given in the manual ?

Have you plugged the right cables into the correct sockets ?
