?Freeze valve? how to replace in a 98 Cadillac DeVille
To replace the freeze valve in a 1998 Cadillac DeVille, you will need to follow these steps:
- Locate the freeze valve. It is typically located near the radiator or the heater core, and it is responsible for preventing the cooling system from freezing in cold weather.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. This will prevent any electrical accidents while you are working on the car.
- Drain the cooling system. This will allow you to remove the freeze valve without spilling coolant all over the engine compartment. To drain the cooling system, locate the drain valve at the bottom of the radiator and open it.
- Remove the freeze valve from the cooling system. This will typically involve loosening the mounting bolts or screws that hold it in place, and then pulling it out of the system.
- Install the new freeze valve. To do this, you will need to reverse the steps you took to remove the old valve. Start by placing the new valve in the same position as the old one, and then secure it in place with the mounting bolts or screws.
- Refill the cooling system. Once the new freeze valve is installed, you will need to refill the cooling system with the appropriate type and amount of coolant.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable and start the engine. This will allow you to test the new freeze valve and make sure it is functioning properly.
It is important to follow these steps carefully to ensure that you replace the freeze valve correctly and safely. If you are not comfortable with performing this task yourself, it is recommended that you seek the assistance of a qualified mechanic.
Engine coolant temperature sensor
it is on the left side cylinder head...about mid way...between number 2 and number 4 Ignition coils...but lower...below but not under valve cover.
With engine at normal operating temperature why is the top radiator hose hot and the bottom hose warm?
It is normal for the top radiator hose to be hotter than the lower hose. The top hose brings the heated coolant from the engine to the radiator, and the lower hose returns the cooler water from the radiator back to the engine to help keep the engine at proper temperature. For the smell, check to see if you have any oil leaks, especially where the oil may run/drip on to the exhaust manifold. Check the valve cover gaskets, and look for excessively oily areas on the bottom of the car to see if you can find where the oil is leaking from.

Did you check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes?
Did you disconnect the battery when swapping all these parts out.
Did you check the battery voltage?
