If the on/off switch has failed, I would get it repaired under warranty by firstly contacting the supplier and obtaining a returns note or warranty repair notification.
The most likely reasons are
the heating element has failed
or it is blocked with limescale

When switch to carpet, the difference is that the brush roller turns. When it is on hard floors setting it doesn't. Remove the base plate, remove the brush and the belt. There is likely something wrapped around the drive spindle or clutch.
