I had the same problem a while back and ask here. I was told to take it to a tech. Not the answer I was looking for. I did some searching and found a diagram then knew what I needed. Here is my reply... I just replaced mine. wasn't hard at all. I couldn't find just the plastic part, had to buy the whole thing. First it is called a Presser foot shaft assembly, part #xb0876001. You can buy it from Sew4Less.com and it cost me 25.57 with shipping. You will have to remove the front cover and take out the two screws holding the bar in. You will also need to remove the lifter bar and end panel to get the bar out. Insert your new part and replace the covers and lifter bar. This is how I fixed mine. Hope it helps.

Initially, the "safety device has been activated" error is usually caused by a jammed thread or fabric. 2 possible causes The upper thread has become tangled around the bobbin case, The needle is bent and hitting the needle plate, so the machine stops. To fix this error. 1, Unplug your machine, 2. Remove the needle ( I know it is in a down position and locked up) but you can be able to remove it. 3. After removing the needle, turn your hand wheel if still locked up or stiff. Remove your needle plate and remove all your threads both upper and lower. 4. Clean your bobbin area using a brush take a deep breath then blow. 5. After that, try to turn your hand wheel again, if the hand wheel moves freely, rethread your machine and replace your needle with a new one. Then try to sew a few stitches using a hand wheel (do not sew using a pedal) if the hand wheel creates stitches that is the time to sew using the pedal. If the problem is still there, you possibly have broken gear that needs to be replaced

Question edited for clarity. Your tension is incorrect, either the top tension is too tight or the bottom tension is too loose. Tension is a delicate tug of war between top and bottom thread to get the hooked loop of thread dead centre in the pieces of material. The is also a slight possibility that you are using a need that is too large and making a hole that is too big for the thread, and is making it loose. Most good sewing machine suppliers should be able to get you one. If yours is a reasonably new machine (last 20 years or so) and it is a low shank machine they're quite easy to get and usually reasonably cheap.

You need to raise the feed dogs.
