Strip it down behind the knob and the venturi tube. You have spiders nests back there and the flame is pooling there instead of firing down the venturi tube to the burner. The venturi mixes air with the gas.

After removing the 16.4 propane tank from my coleman lantern, the tank valve stayed open. So I screwed it back on. How do you make the self close valve, work?

if rusted replace all tubes and check rubber hoses and regulator for possible leaks

Don't worry, you'll be grilling in no time, if you follow these instructions:

1. Turn the gas tank valve OFF.

2. Disconnect the grill's hose from the propane tank and wait 5 minutes.

3. Reconnect the hose to the tank and open the tank's gas valve VERY, VERY SLOWLY (Slow Motion, slow).

Once the valve is fully open light one burner and turn it to HIGH. Has the flame height returned to normal? If so, light the remaining burner and turn it to HIGH. Do both flame heights look normal?
If so, you solve the problem! Remember to always turn the tank valve ON Very, Very Slowly.

There appears to be no recalibration mode on this unit which is bad. Having said that, this is cooking thermometer, so the internal temperature of your steak being 130'F or 132'F isn't going to matter. My thermometers at work were calibrated every week in iced water slurry and the results recorded in a log. Here is the manual. Burn the buildup off with a torch connected to a propane tank, the kind you would use on a camp stove.(the tank)

Check the new element with a test meter / multimeter, set to ohms. check the old one too. If the old one has continuity, then the issue is the wiring, the thermostat / thermistor or the control panel itself. make model (what it is) in all questions please.

This is common on BBQ grills in the winter. Blow the jets out with a can of compressed air to get rid of spider cocoons. The other issue is that Propane doesn't vaporize as well in winter. You should turn the gas valve off at the end of the summer to maintain the pressure in the tank.

There is most certainly something in your gas lines that is disconnected, rusted through or out of alignment. Find where that excess gas is and fix that point. Look for holes in gas lines or something that is slightly pulled apart.

2. This link is to a universal stopper that should work. If that does not work then my suggestion is to hit some garage sales or ebay and buy a vintage thermos with that stopper.

The burner has a fixed orifice, but there may be an adjustable air shutter (to adjust more or less air) at the end of the venturi tube that inserts over the orifice. If not, also try removing the gas valve knob and see if there is a small screw inside the shaft that you can adjust the flames. Most stoves have these. Also be sure the burner hasn't been spilled on. it may just need to be cleaned for a proper flame.
