Is there a technique or proper way to hold on to a ballet bar?

You should never put too much weight on to the bar (do not use it as a way to support yourself). Your hand should rest very gently on the bar. Try resting your thumb on top of the bar with the rest of your fingers as opposed to underneath the bar causing you to have a tighter grip.
