I bought my first suit and left it at the shop alterations. Is there anything special I should be looking for when I pick it up?

Just make sure that you try it on before you leave the shop. It will be much harder to come back and complain about the alterations once you've already gone home. But also it often happens that one set of alterations isn't enough and you might need to make some more small changes so don't be shy to try it on before you leave and decide if it's right.

I have an acrylic blanket that feels different when wet, sort of tight. But when it dries out, it is soft and sort of spongy like before. Hopefully this will be the case for your sweater.

Do wedding veils come in all different lengths or are they all long?

Wedding veils come in so many different lengths and the trick is to match the length and style to suit your wedding dress. There are short, shoulder, elbow, waist, knee and floor length amongst others. It's really important that you get advice about styles before you buy a veil and then always be sure that it matches the color of your dress.

When I went to buy a suit, the shop assistant asked me what style of vents I want for the jacket and I had no idea what he meant. Can someone help me?

Vents are the flaps on a suit jacket. In the 80s it was very popular not to have vents in a suit jacket at all but now that has changed. 2 side vents are popular in the European fashion scene. A central vent is a popular choice and you can't really go wrong with that option.

What should I think about before I buy a suit? It is a lot of money so I really want to make a sensible decision.

I think the biggest question is what is the reason for the suit? The answer to this question can help guide the kind of suit that you buy. Not all suits are the same. An office suit is likely to be a darker color and more classic in cut. Is it a wedding or funeral type suit that will only be worn a few times a year and therefore isn\'t worth spending a lot of money on and maybe should be black or navy?
If it\'s an interview suit, you want it to look good but not so good that it looks like you are showing off.
Or is it a fashion statement ie a suit you can wear with sneakers and a t-shirt or just the jacket with jeans?
Figure out what you are looking for and then you can start your shopping trip.
Good Luck.

I need to get the jacket on my new suit altered. The sleeves need to be taken up a bit. How long should I leave them?

Ask the tailor to shorten them but to leave you at least a quarter of an inch of the shirt cuff showing. It looks so much better than having no sleeve showing.

I bought a 3 piece suit for my wedding and now I really dont have the opportunity to wear it. How can I get use out of it, it just seems like such a waste of money?

One suggestion is to wear to the suit without the vest. The vest is what makes it seem like a very formal clothing item. You can just wear the suit by itself for other people's weddings, interviews etc.

Also you can use the vest without the suit, pairing it with jeans and a t-shirt when you go out.

Are pants tighter when you first buy them?

Yes new pants are usually tighter and they will stretch out when you wear them. I usually find that they return to their normal size once they've been washed but over time they do tend to stretch.

It is really hard to tell if a suit jacket is too big or too small. What should I be looking for when I try one on?

Ok so here are 2 basic principles to follow when you try on a suit jacket;

1; It shouldn't be so tight when you do it up that it strains across the buttons

2; It shouldn't be too loose - not more than a fists worth between the buttons and your chest.

How many buttons should I go for on my suit jacket? I have no idea what is considered trendy these days.

The three buttoned single breasted suit is actually a very popular choice with young men these days. Two-button suits used to be seen as a very conservative choice but they've become a hit lately with designers who are streamlining the style for the runways. One button suits are not a popular choice but it's really a matter of personal taste.
