I'm a professional Handyman and install fans a lot. The most important thing is to be sure the fan mount is sturdy. You can get pros at Home Depot and Lowe's to help you buy the right stuff. Many people just take down a light and put up a fan. NOT GOOD! ... if the electrical box isn't really sturdy, the weight of the fan and over time, could cause the fan to fall down. Your description of "what you discovered" isn't clear enough. Offhand, I would say 'yes'. I only charge about $65 to install fans, so it might be worth it to you to find a handyman to do it for you. Try Craigslist. If you feel you can do it, 'google it' -install a ceiling fan. Try watching videos too.

There are two ways these are connected. One is by a grub screw, that is a screw that when tightened is either flush with the shaft and so hard to see, or is slightly recessed in the shaft which is a bit easier to spot, use an 'alen' or hex key to remove this first. Second way of securing the shaft is to use a 'Morse Taper' where the spindle is made to a taper which causes the taper on the shaft to lock to it. Identify which end of the taper is narrower [you may need to measure the diameter of the shaft to determine this as there may only be a few mm difference in the diameter on either end] then use a hammer and tap sharply from the larger end toward the narrower end..

There are a number of YouTube videos that show how to replace the motor assembly on a Broan bath fan. Once you have unplugged the fan and removed the motor mounting plate you will have easy access to replace the blower wheel and/or the motor assembly. Just go to You Tube and search on Broan

The start capacitor for the fan motor is defective.
