What is anaerobic water treatment?

Anaerobic water treatment meant that bacteria which are not oxygen dependent are converting contaminations in the water. Anaerobic bacteria can only convert when oxygen levels are very low, because they use other sorts of substances to perform chemical conversion. Anaerobic bacteria don't only develop carbon dioxide and water during conversion, but also methane gas.

My portable water filter is not pumping well anymore. Is it broken?

Most likely you filter is clogged. When you filter water, you are trapping live organisms which remain there until you clean the filter. I recommend checking the manufacturer's instructions on cleaning and maintaining the product.

Is it better to buy a portable water filter with a pre-filter?

I recommend using a pre-filter. What this does is capture larger debris first, causing less clogging overall. It will save you maintenance problems in the future.

Do portable water filters rid of viruses potentially living in the water?

Unfortunately not. Most filters come with a screen between 0.4-0.2 microns. Viruses are extremely small and would need less than a 0.1 micron screen to trap them.

How effective are portable water filters?

Their effectiveness is measured by something called 'pore-size efficiency'. These are microscopic measurements (known as microns) of the size of the openings of the water filter. To be very effective, you should look for a filter with a micron size of less than 0.4 microns; this will ensure that bacteria has been removed from the water.
