Bodum toaster handle not staying down

Hi, there is a electro-magnet that should hold down the handle when it is pushed down. This magnet is wired to the electronic control board. If the magnet has a resistance of approximately 180 ohms it should be good. The other part is the control board that should supply voltage to the magnet. If there is no voltage on the connector (red) the the board is faulty. The problem is to find the part!!

Only the side elements are working on the toaster. The middle elements which would toast one side of a slice of bread are not working. Is it possible to repair/replace the middle elements?

Maybe. Unplug the toaster and remove the bottom plate as you would for cleaning. look for the wires connected to the middle elements and see if one has become disconnected or broken. If one or more of the connections to the middle element is a quick disconnect type (click link for a picture), https://s16-us2.ixquick.com/cgi-bin/serveimage?url=http%3A%2F%2Fts4.mm.bing.net%2Fth%3Fid%3DJN.EnzjOARZwnQZZjF7oGU2Dw%26pid%3D15.1%26f%3D1&sp=5dc5e8fde9f2f3462b6483c20bb42f01 then inspect it for overheating, oxidation or corrosion. You may be able to clean it up with a Scotch-brite metal polishing pad. On my toaster, the connections to the heater elements are metal strips riveted to tabs from the element assemblies. One strip is riveted to the power neutral; the other has a quick disconnect tab for a wire from the thermostat. A loose or broken rivet could be the problem, but do not use an aluminum pop rivet to repair it. It can't take the heat, even if you could find one small enough. I've seen toaster heater elements evaporate over the years - they get a hot spot, which burns off metal, making it thinner and hotter until finally there's nothing left there. At that point the element is gone. I suppose if you could find nichrome ribbon wire of the same width and thickness as the original, you could rebuild the heating element plate, but it would be a delicate task because the mica insulating material is fragile. It's probably more practical to scavenge a working heater assembly from another toaster of similar design, if the electrical connections are serviceable with the tools you have. Unless this is a very fancy unit, it's probably cheaper and easier to scrap it out and replace the whole thing.

Control lever will not stay down

Unless you have power switch on to the toaster, the level will not stay down. Ensure you have main power available! If the unit is powered, check that the 'toast darkeness' level is set accordingly - it is this 'thermostat' that determines when to eject the toast: if you checked that you have power and that the darkness level is not set to zero and it still does not work, then it is time to get a new toaster! If not under warranty, it is probably not worth trying to get it repaired.

Control lever does not remain depressed

Over manual use can damage the unit over time. There could be particles tucked under the latches, contacts, and other attachments. Clean the catch tray and turn the entire toaster over and shake it violently. If you have vacuum with air OUT and you can place the hose up to the slots, blow from both the top and bottom to push out debris.

I have an earlier all stainless non-electric Bodum tea kettle

It will be hard to find a repairman and certainly not a DIY soldering project. That said, I would crazy glue the bottom rim thoroughly before giving up. Suggest get some idea from a reputable hardware/houseware store. Bev, Sorry no solution that's easy!
