Is there an instruction booklet that comes with it
Yes, normally there is. Are you looking for an assembly manual or how to use the grill? If it's an assembly manual, the dealer you purchased it from should have one or call Customer Service 800- 793-2292. If it's how to cook on it go to Big Green Egg's website

I am out of fire starters, can I use paper, I cannot get my fire
That may be kind of difficult to do but it won't hurt the Egg. I would just put some unlit charcoal in the Egg then get some going in a chimney starter (also using newspaper by the way) and dump it on top of the unlit charcoal. You probably don't want to add lit charcoal directly onto the Egg's ceramic surface since it could crack. At least I wouldn't try it, my Egg cost too much :)
Big green egg
I converted BGE to gas using parts from popular smoker web site. Please let me know if you are interested in parts list
Will not get hotter than
Temperatures on the Big Green Egg are controlled by opening or partially closing, the dampers on the bottom side of the grill and the top of the grill lid. The more open, the more air gets to the coals and heats the up. Partially closing the dampers lowers the temp.
Keep in mind, the grill thermometer may be faulty. Try setting an oven thermometer (like the kind used in a regular kitchen oven, that sits on the oven rack) on top if the grill grates, when you're preheating the grill with the lid closed.
Hope this helped you to troubleshoot and solve the problem. Happy Grilling!
How are you supposed to heat up the green egg
There are you tube videos. I temporarily take daisy vent cap off top of egg, open bottom vent door wide open, light lump coal 2-3 spots with a loof lighter (from ace hardware) and then close lid. I have one section of galvanized dryer vent from Lowes that I stick on top which accelerates preheating of egg. Once the temp gets to 500, I remove the section of vent by grabbing it with a glove or hotpad. Wait a minute or two for smoke to die down. Place daisy back on top and close bottom vent door down to 1/2" and close daisy 1/2 on top and this should drop temp to 175-250. Use fine adjustments 1/6-1/8" until desired temp is reached. Your food can go on at any time after removing dryer vent. Just burp lid by slightly lifting to allow any heat burst to escape. I also have a gas conversion that works awesome. I just add a small smoke ox over burner that provides enough smoke on front end of cooking process. Advice- keep the butts and ribs on for 6 hours.
Fire ring don't sit level on fire box
Had the same problem. Instuctions show a different ring (smooth on one side, grooved on the other) they say to keep notches facing up. My ring had grooves on one side and large square notches on the other. Due to the way the ring is tapered, the round notches face down, opposite the instructions . And plate warmer fit better. Short answer: flip the ring over.
The lid does not seat
They dont always fit perfectly, To have it fit as good as possible, put lid in down position loosen bands slightly manipulate bands to allow lid weight to close gap then retigthen bands in this position now when closed lid should sit fairly squarely on base
My eggs bottom peice was sweating black tar
Funney no one has answered this at all and this is an old question. But the answer is rather simple. There is nothing wrong with your egg. Yes it is possible under the correct tempurature for this sweating to happen. BGE is made of ceramic material. and one must understand that ceramic material is porous. Yes the BGE is porous from the inside all the way to the outside. Very tiny micro channels of ceramic hold water and when heated gets released into the grill as well as well as release on the outside of the grill. Of course this does not always happen. Normally the grill must be running for a ceratain amount of time and or reach a certain tempurature for this to occur.
I sometimes get a lot
If you're not intending to use the your Egg as a smoker for some foods and are attempting to grill them instead, you should leave the top open.
If in fact, you're using it as a smoker, you need to open the lower damper door a bit more and open the top vent a bit more too. That way, the smokey flavor should not be that over powering. But, keep you eye on the thermometer, as you don't want the temp to exceed 250 degrees F, if you're smoking food.
Hope this helps you and Happy GrillingII Thanks for choosing FixYa.
