Hello Sarah. That is a beautiful serger! Let's check a few things: 1. Make sure that all the threads are well embedded in the the tension dials. 2. Make sure that the needle/s is/are pushed all the way up. This is the most likely cause. 3. If after checking items #1 and #2 above, and still not satisfaction, change the needle/s. Make sure that the correct needles are being used. Page 50 in the manual specifies HA x 1SP/CR . Something here may be helpful. Although they may not be your particular model, sewing machines tend to thread the same from model to model. Be sure to ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading the top thread! Baby Lock b15 threading Google Search

This other site, http://www.sewingmanuals.com/Sewing_Machine_Manuals/babylock.htm , also claims to have the manual. Unfortunately, Babylock no longer has the manual for the Companion 1550 (BL1550) for download. It's unlikely that any Babylock dealers will have the manual. Check to make sure the needle is installed correctly. There is a front and back to the needle. If that isn't the problem, you'll need to take it for service.

Sounds like you have to take off the throat plate and clean out threads under it.  Sometime they ball up and prevent the needle from going down and catching the bobbin thread. You can't see themuntil you take off the plate.  Follow the directions.  It is easy.

Did you remember to put down the presser foot?

Remove the top thread from the machine. ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning. Set the top tension to the midway point and retest the machine. Tweak the top tension so the top and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the fabric.

I would ask the technician at the Bernina dealer.

I think I'd opt to take it for service when possible. It sounds like something serious.

If you can, pick up your machine, turn it upside down and shake it. Be sure to put down a towel or something on the table because those little screws will roll or bounce to unimaginable places! If it doesn't fall out, you may find it rolling around inside the case where the bobbin is located.
