Sounds like a problem with the power supply board, typically power surges will cause fuses and capacitors to blow. If you go to tvrepairkits .com you can find a power supply kit with instructions that will allow you to repair this problem yourself. Newer sets are a lot more picky about the signal and will show all kinds of noise etc---even on cable a number of the older sets have a better picture.
