solenoid. what is the best way of fixing this part how do i go about it? the car is likely stuck in second as that is the default gear when there is a transmission issue. Is the check engine light on?

Solenoid's bendix gear is stuck. Have someone hit (not too hard) the starter while you try to start the car. This usually works by dislodging a stuck bendix gear. Make a simple test of the alternator:
