replace the 'sock' on the submersible fuel pump inside the fuel tank and that this would require many hours of labour. Is this true or is there a simple in-line filter between the tank and the engine?

to be replaced. You can always add an additional filter in line before the fuel pump, but it should not be necessary. To replace the fuel filter you need to drain the tank and replace the fuel petcock
