remove thermostat and try running engine, or fabricate a rubber stopper on the end of a garden hose to put in hole where thermostat goes, remove lower radiator hose and flush water as hard as possible

thermostat housing. Remove the housing and replace the thermostat. I suggest you buy the Chilton manual or equivalent for that car. That will help you a lot. Most parts stores have them or you can buy
