in a diesel!!!!!! My bet is the fuel pump. Either a fuse is blown or your pump is bad. VW do not have to be bled like other diesels. Your ether expieriment let you know it runs so it is a fuel problem

...fuel pump out....hooked it to a battery,was stuck,kept taping the wires to the battery then made the pumping nosie.....hooked the pump back up....hear it come... no fuel in lines.....car still wont ...
